Facebook is testing a section that informs its users about local news. The new section called 'Today In' brings news from local authorities and publishers.
According to a report on Recode the new section is being tested in six cities of United States. The initiative is part of the Journalism Project initiative, a measure to establish strong ties between Facebook and the news industry which was started last year. The project was started to curb fake news after the 2016 US elections.
The new section will show stories from local publishers and emergency updates from local authorities. Based on the location your are living in, you will be fed local news relevant to you from your locality. The social media giant is using human and machine learning software to curate the content on the 'Today In' section.
Local publishers will be approved by the News Partnership team of the company to filter out fake news from the section.
Facebook recently brought a button which gives information about source and context about the article shared on the platform.
