I am starting this series telling you stories that you might never heard of.
Today, we are talking about the worst train accident in India. In case you didn't knew, India's railway system is the world's fourth largest. Unfortunately not the safest, since a lot of people are dying in train accidents every year.
In 1981 a train with approximately 1,000 passengers on board was traveling through the northeastern state of Bihar about 250 miles from Calcutta.
The tracks were slick because of the hard rains and as soon as the train approached the bridge over the Baghmati River, a cow tried to cross the tracks. Considering the cow a sacred animal, the train engineer slammed the brakes and the last seven cars derailed into the river.
Rescue teams were hours away and by the time they arrived, almost 600 people were dead.
