Big Sis

I had always wanted an elder sister growing up. Not just to do the heavy lifting or when I grow up I will go visiting her and her husband as an in-law.

The stage of innocence and imagination is one stage I can't easily forget. Back then when I was little, people wished for bikes, toys, ball. But all I wanted was an elder sister. I guess that's why I can't ride a bike or play football, lol. I am serious I am in my late 20s and I don't know how to ride a bike or car, or even play football. My friends normally call me a woman. Sometimes though when they are watching football and am not.

Regardless, that's what I wanted, I wanted someone that would shout at me and later tell me they loved me, some that will wash my clothes and clean up after me. I wanted someone that would fight those silly bullies.i was born into an extended family and most of my cousin brothers all had elder sister, except me.

One faithful evening we were in the parlor, listening to our moms speak, they were gossiping about interesting advantages of having the first child being a female, you know mom's they love in-law visiting, especially that thing they call omugor (Igbo I think). And they could not stop talking about the girls husbands and referring them, as angel who will send financially support. Yeah, in Africa that's a big sis for you.

But for some certain reason all those things were never in my head, they never intrigued me. For me they were added advantages of having a big sister, but the major gain was someone I will call big sis. The name big sis alone give me joy. Even up to this very day, i just envy people that do have a big sis.

Around July 2022, I was in school, my dad called Ray, I don't know how to tell you this but you have a big sister. At that point, I didn't care how that story came to be or why. I was filled with joy and all I could think about was to see her. I was in school then.

The moment we were given some week for break in school, i packed my bags, and off to the village I went. You could see the eyes, she was excited to see me, it was as if she did always wanted a junior bro too. I knew back then that I don't go to the village often so I collected her necklace, I still wear it till date. I never take it off.

I don't get to see her often, even after graduation, but in my heart's heart I am happy I do have a beautiful lady I can call big sis. No more intimidation. As a kid I wanted a big sister so bad, that even in my mid 20s I was still excited to get one. A miracle of some sort, but my wish came to reality and for that I am thankful.

I don't know how to fully express my thanks to @Hivenaija, but, for a time I almost forgot how much I wanted an elder sister. Thanks for this therapeutic recall. I will go see her after this.

Thanks for visiting this prompt.

Having a big sister is the best. You are even lucky to have one, unlike me that does not have big sister.

Bro... That's ehnn...
Sorry
