Took the kids squirrel hunting today

in #family7 years ago (edited)

Sometimes exploring is just a matter of stepping in the back yard. The twins have been begging me to take them squirrel hunting for a week so today we decided to go. Didn't take long and I realized squirrel hunting was over when they found the creek

I wasn't mad that they were loud and we didn't see a single squirrel, I'm just glad to see em being kids outside instead of glued to the TV or a video game, and we didn't come home comely empty handed as I found a nice fresh chicken mushroom that will be a good replacement for squirrel for dinner

Hope you enjoyed the photos

What?!? No Sea Squirrels? =p

Chicken of the Woods is a fine substitute for actual meat, though. Good on 'ya.

Lol sea squirrels. I want to draw what that would look like now....haha

Bet it would look better than a sea donkey lol

Glad I am not the only one who let's the kids make the rules for the day. We never end up in the stream on a hunting trip but it seems every time we go crabbing it ends up being a swimming trip. I never mind either as outside is where I grew up and I firmly believe it is an important part of being a child. I always feel for kids who live in the cities who only spend time outside walking to and from the car. Keep teaching them about life and they will teach you the new technology as it hits the market or at least that is how it is in my house.

We found a chicken of the woods (sulfur shelf) mushroom several years ago that weighed about 80 pounds total. Absolutely enormous. And delicious!

Looks like squirrel fishing rather than squirrel hunting.

We spent the last two days fishing

What a great Dad!!! Lucky Kids!!! I don't know if you have had this experience but I used to have quite a few chickens around and they were friendly and willing to come around very close to you until you went out with the intent to slaughter them all of a sudden the chickens were absolutely out of sight and faster than grease lightning. I guess the squirrel think much in the same way!

Yes we used to have chickens had to get rid of them because one of my twins Megan was diagnosed with Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and one of her meds makes her susceptible to fungal lung infections Dr's were concerned with histoplasmosis but you are correct they know when I'm deer hunting squirrels bark at me from 10 ft away and won't shut up lol

Kids kinda make their own rules.
