Stepping Out, With M'lady
Just then, out of nowhere,
Kries had grabbed him and thrown him out the door. Not knowing what I should do, I called for Kora, and ran outside after Kries. He had the guy pinned against the adjacent wall and was yelling and threatening him. Kora came up behind me.
“Do you know him?” I asked.
“No...” she replied wearily.
I ran over to Kries now, and pulled him away from the guy, who was obviously scared out of his mind.
“Baby, come on, he's really drunk and obviously scared of you. Let's just go. It isn't worth this much trouble.”
I pulled him towards the door,
he kept looking back at the guy, who as soon as we were no longer within arm's reach, ran. I could feel Kries steaming with anger. Kora could see I needed a minute alone with him, so as soon as we were inside, she locked the back door, and went to the front of the store to continue with the register, leaving us alone in the back. Kries was pacing back and forth, holding the back of his head with his hands.
“Please calm down honey. We're alright, I am alright.”
I gently pushed him against the wall
and slid my hands across his and pulled them on to my waist. I could see the anger draining off of his face. Now concern flooded his eyes. He pulled me up against him in a hug, laying his head down on my shoulder. I held him like that for a while. When he lifted his head back up, I could see he felt better, and had calmed down.
“Are you alright now?”
“Yes baby, are you?”
“Yes.”
He kissed me and hugged me again.
“Now then.. to dinner?” he asked, forcing a smile.
“Yes.”
As we walked into the front of the shop,
I could see the concern all over Kora's face. I smiled, reassuring her that it was fine now, and with that we all exited the store. Kora locked up behind us. Kries was on high alert now. I took his arm, and he held out his other to escort Kora. As we all walked down the street to the restaurant, I couldn't help but feel bad for the man Kries had threatened. I knew that I shouldn't because he shouldn't of grabbed me like he did, but he was really intoxicated, and I know Kries can be quite intimidating. I prayed for him, and let it go.
When we reached the restaurant,
which was called The Koral Reef, I heard my stomach rumble. Apparently the baby and I were both hungry.
“The Koral Reef? That's sweet that he incorporated your name into the moniker! Is it a seafood restaurant?” I asked, as we approached.
“Thank you, I thought so too. It's a seafood and pasta restaurant.”
Kora smiled at us, as we entered.
I looked up at Kries and mouthed 'yum'. Seafood was one of my absolute favorite types of food. The inside of the restaurant was beautiful. It looked like an ocean reef, the lighting, the decorations, and the aquariums, laid out to be classy rather than cheesy. Suddenly, the smells of butter and garlic crab made my stomach growl. Just then Kora's husband came to meet us.
“Hello! I'm Tommy. So nice to meet both of you! My Kora has told me you two are on your honeymoon, is that right?”
“Yes that's right. I am Kries Hatfield, and this is my wife Clara.”
Kries shook his hand.
“Well Kries, Clara, I hope you two are hungry, I have quite a meal planned for us.”
“Oh we are,” Kries reassured him.
As he led us to our seats, I couldn't help but think maybe I shouldn't eat anything raw. Kries pulled out my chair for me, and as he did I whispered to him.
“What can I eat that won't potentially harm the baby?”
“I think you'll be okay with anything cooked. If you are served anythings raw, I will eat it, alright?”
“Alright.”
I smiled at all the happy people
with their families sitting near us. Tommy was jabbering at Kries about something, and Kora was people watching like I was. When the first course came, I was relieved to see it was cooked crab with a garlic butter dipping sauce. Every course continued like that with one exception, raw oysters. Kries put them on his plate, explaining to Kora and Tommy's bewildered faces that I hated oysters.
After a thoroughly enjoyed meal,
we sat and talked over tea. After about thirty minutes of that, Kries could tell I was getting really tired, so he gently finished the conversation, thanked them for their hospitality, and promised to stop by once more before we headed back home. Kries offered to pay for dinner, but Tommy refused, saying that it was his treat. They walked us back to our carriage, where Kris gave them a lift back to the restaurant.
“Have a good night you two!” they called after us, as they went inside.
“You too!” we yelled back.
The next week was as wonderful
as the past days had been; we visited Kora and Tommy multiple times, and still had a lot of alone time. Now as I was packing to go home, I felt a twinge of sadness. I liked Ireland, especially Listowel. I was happy to be going home because I was homesick and wanted to see my family, but I knew this place was somewhere I had to come back too, one day.
The boat ride home was worse
than the ride there, as far as sea sickness goes. I threw up the entire time, and was not liking it one bit. When we reached land, I was all to happy. The carriage ride home was also nerve racking, as we were planning on telling everyone I had gotten pregnant upon arrival. When we pulled up at mom and dad's house, everyone came out to greet us. We hugged and kissed them all, so happy to see them.
“We have some news.”
Kries and I smiled as Kries rubbed my stomach obviously.
“Oh my god... you are pregnant!” my mother shouted.
We nodded, and everyone jumped on us.
They were ecstatic, just like us. I looked at Genie and she winked at me. I knew everything was only going to get better from here on out.
'What could possibly go wrong now that hasn't already happened?' I asked myself, happy to be home.
