Bovine mastitis: symptoms and treatment

source

Bovine mastitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the mammary glands, generating changes in the milk of the cow. This is a frequent disease in milk producing cows and produces great losses for those who breed, because the appearance of this results in the quality and production of milk, so it is necessary to have a monitoring and control of the bovine population with the purpose of preventing it.

Causes of bovine mastitis:

Apparently, bovine mastitis is a disease that can be contracted by direct exposure to infectious germs, changes in cow habitat and the peculiarities of the same. These invade the breast tissue and inflame it.

Classification of bovine mastitis:

Contagious mastitis: this is caused by internal microorganisms of the cow. The cow can contract it in the milking phase, by the use of contaminated tools or the improper manipulation by the workers. This affects notoriously the production of milk.

Environmental mastitis: this occurs due to the appearance of environmental microorganisms and can be transmitted between milkings or at the stage when cows do not produce milk. This type of mastitis, in some way, highlights the level of contamination of the farm itself.

Symptoms of bovine mastitis:

In cases of subclinical mastitis, it is difficult to detect because there is no visible alteration in the udder and milk. To detect it, it is necessary to count microorganisms and somatic cells.

In cases of clinical mastitis, the cow may feel pain when touched, inflammation in the affected area. The milk has alterations such as blood clots, discolored serum and in some cases they can have blood.

In an acute mastitis, the life of the cow may be at risk. Signs may include febrile symptoms, decreased milk production and / or loss of appetite.

Diagnosis of bovine mastitis:

To make the diagnosis of mastitis it will be necessary, first of all, to take samples of the milk and then carry out the following studies: breast cell recount, milk bacteria culture and a mastitis test: California mastitis test.

Treatment

The best treatment is prevention, once the cow is diagnosed and the type of mastitis is identified, the veterinarian will assign the appropriate medication for its subsequent cure. This will consist in the application of antimicrobials via intramammary.

Prevention:

Disinfect cows before and after milking.
Maintain proper hygiene during the milking process.
Keep milking machines clean and in good condition.
Keep it well hydrated and fed.
Have a clean place where the cows can be without risk of contamination.
Keep the nipples clean and dry.
Leave the foot cows a while after milking
