Pineapple is a fruit with an edible multiple fruit consisting of coalesced berries and its plant is significant in the Bromeliaceae family. Its scientific name is called Ananas comosus. Pineapple is a herbaceous perennial, it produces up to 200 flowers and once the individual fruits joins together, they create what is called Pineapple. Pineapple fruits is arranged in two interlocking helices,Eight in one direction and 13 in other direction. Pineapple fixes carbon dioxide at night by storing it as acid malate and then after,will release it during the day with the help of photosynthesis. The fruit was introduced first in Hawaii when a Spanish ship brought it there in the 1500s. Later, Portuguese took the fruit from Brazil and brought it to India in 1550. The Dutch brought the pineapple to northern Europe and the first pineapple that was cultivated successfully have been grown by Pieter de la Court at Meerburg in 1658. Pineapple juice is so sweet and edible,it can be taken fresh,cooked or preserved too. Many people love to take pineapple juice because of its taste and easy preparation.
Pineapples are attracted by many diseases and the most serious one is a disease caused by mealybugs and it is found on the surface of pineapples. There are other diseases like pink disease,bacterial heart rot,butt rot,and yellow spot virus. The pink disease appears when the fruit changes from black to brown color. In Europe, the pineapple is a symbol of welcome and hospitality,also the same symbol in architecture.
Pineapples are rich in Vitamins, enzymes and antioxidant. They are sweet but have low calories. According to the U.S department of Agriculture pineapple that is canned in light syrup has 131 calories per cup and have 31.88 grams of sugar. The leaves contain bromelain and also spiny. They injure and cause skin problem to people that cut the leaves to feed animals. The leaves are not good for pigs and poultry.
