Despite his indiscretion back in 1997 when he was involved in an extramarital affair, the guy made 180 degree about-face. Everyone is entitled to a second chance, and he made the best of it. I personally didn't know much about his family life, like most fans, but due to the tragedy, we all got to know that for many years now, his family and being a good father were paramount in his life.
