My feathered friend this week is a young grouse I saw crossing the highway. Luckily the bird made it safely across without being hit by a vehicle.
Two adult grouse in the apple tree in winter. Their diet changes with the seasons. They eat these apples all fall and any frozen ones, left on the tree, in winter.
A lot of apple trees on the property are not good eating apples but the grouse eat them. Insects, twigs, buds and conifer needles are part of their diet.
Hunters kill many grouse each year. The hunting season is for a month in the fall. I don’t like to think of the grouse being shot. Here they are also food for the coyotes and foxes.
This grouse doesn’t mind the snow as he walks across the back yard in winter.
The grouse make their home in the forest and stay through all seasons. The forest provides a good cover for them.
Location: Prince Edward Island, Canada.
All photos are mine.

Grate pictures. I think I saw a grouse last week but I'm not sure, it disappeared in the grass quite quickly.
Beautiful pictures, @redheadpei! We don’t have grouse here, so I have never seen one in real life!
Thanks @jaynas-minime and for stopping by. I live in the country and get to see a lot of wildlife.
It looks like a chicken or a boring pheasant.

Yes, but you should see the fabulous display of feathers when they do the mating dance. 😊
Your photos are fantastic! When my kids were little we lived further north and my daughter was 8 years old and she made friends with wild grouse. She named it Cluck. I really must write up that story someday. I'm resteeming this!
Thanks so much. I’m happy you liked the photos, Melinda. Your daughter making friends with the grouse would be a great story.
I've tried to put it down on paper before, but I am just not a writer and I've always been disappointed that I didn't do the story justice.
Cute birds!
And it's the first time I've seen an apple tree too (they don't exist here and it kinda surprises me that I never searched a picture of it...). Now I'm busy imagining...how do birds eat them? They don't have teeth...
Yes, there is an expression here. “Scarce as hen’s teeth.” 😂. True indeed, they do not have teeth but they peck at the apples to eat them. You would be surprised at how fast they can devour an apple.
Would watch a video of that!
Hi @redheadpei, I did not realise that grouse were such fascinating birds. I am thinning that they are popular game birds that are served for dinner. Lovely photos.
I love seeing the grouse around, Angie. Yes, they are game birds. Hunters shoot them for food or sport but I could never shoot them or want anyone to come on the property to kill them.
We have no grouse here in South Africa,, but partridge, pheasant, and of course guinea fowl to name a few. All hunted for food.
Same as you, nobody would ever touch a bird here in our garden.
Blessings!
Thanks Stephen. Blessings my friend!
Don't think I've ever seen a grouse before
Some people call them partridges but they are a bit different.
Wow, I've never seen one like this before, thanks for sharing @redheadpei! They are beautiful.
Thanks @roselifecoach! I love seeing them around the property. 😊
Howdy redheadpei! Wonderful photos you got there, it's interesting that they hang around all year. Are they like the size of a crow?
Great photos, I love these birds. Have you seen the chicks when they're just hatched? So tiny and cute, not much bigger than bugs.
