Palazzo Costabili, known as Ludovico il Moro

Also in the beautiful Via XX Settembre and precisely at number 124 is the Palazzo Costabili , also known as Palazzo di Ludovico il Moro, today the seat of the National Archaeological Museum of Ferrara , of which you can see the photo of the main entrance in the photo above.
The building, even if unfinished, is one of the main masterpieces of the great court architect Biagio Rossetti.

According to a hypothetical legend, the Duke of Milan Ludovico il Moro , to escape the eventual defeat of the war he fought against the French, decided to have a sumptuous residence built in the quiet Este capital, the city of origin of his beautiful wife. Beatrice d'Este .
For this reason, around 1495 , he entrusted Antonio Costabili with the task of having this house built to the then ambassador of the Milanese city at the Este court .
The works of Biagio Rossetti ended in 1504 , but as previously mentioned the building remained unfinished.

In the rooms of theNational Archaeological Museum, located on the noble floor of the building, exhibits various artefacts from the excavations of the Etruscan city of Spina , which flourished between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC . overlooking the Adriatic Sea at the nearby mouth of the Po river, it is one of the most important cities of the Po Etruria .
So with a visit to the Museum you can seize two opportunities on the fly: visit an interesting museum and in the meantime turn inside a wonderful ancient palace… what more do you want? Smile
