Chapter 3. Part 1

Sacrificial Beginnings

The old man rushed the two young men out the back door, Samuel kept trying to protest leaving his father behind but the old man shouted and grabbed Samuel’s face “Samuel, you mustn't fail me. Escape from the village and take Castus to Silverbrook. Tell them what has happened here. Now go!”

Samuel nodded and the two young men ran up a hill into the forest.

They climbed up a tree just enough to see the center of the village from afar.

They could see the village being infiltrated by many knights fully armed being lead by a man who sat upon a large black horse. They could not hear what was being said. But within the village, it was clear, they were under the oppression of Lord Dominicus.

“I am looking for a young man, not more than Twenty. Long black hair. He is my property and I will see him brought forward or you will tell me where he is headed at once.” The corrupt Lord demanded

The old man stood behind his people out of site of Dominicus and gazed at the hill for a moment. He then stepped forward calmly “I am sorry, my lord. We have not seen a man of that description.”

The other villagers were silent. Dominicus got down from his horse, stepped towards the old man and looked him up and down, then struck him to the ground.

A few of the villagers stepped forward to help the old man, but he waved them away. The people stood around watching.

“This is your last chance, old man. Tell me where he went.” Dominicus whispered

The old man smiled “The Sparrow will fly again.” he said with blood in his teeth.

From the far treetops, Castus and Samuel watched Dominicus shove his sword through the old man’s chest.

Samuel went to let out a scream but Castus quickly placed his hand upon his mouth and held him back from leaping from the tree.

The old man fell to the ground and could not see his son in the woods. His final thoughts were of his son and justice.

Samuel climbed down from the tree after shaking Castus off of him.

“We must do as my father said and go to Silverbrook. Now.” Samuel said calmly, Castus tried to speak to comfort Samuel

“Let’s go.” the young man said sharply.

Castus looked back at the village, which was filled with screams of sorrow and fear, and then to Samuel’s back and reluctantly followed. So much had already been sacrificed and he did not know why.

He thought that Dominicus would come after him. But Castus underestimated him once more and it would not happen again. He needed answers and he needed them soon.
