I saw the movie years ago, did not remember much, but some of what I remembered wasn't even in the book
It was so well written and creepy at times. The fire hose scene, the scene where Jack sees the hedge animals move.. those were great.
And I also liked how Jacks personality traits were taken and increased by the hotel. That there was a gradual change in his behavior. He already broke his sons arm without any evil influence, attacked a student; felt like he might not be "good enough" to provide for his family. The toxic expectations on men, generational trauma, and no professional support system (AA, therapy, rehab..) when it came to his alcoholism.
I think the hotel picked Jack because he was the most vulnerable. He did not talk about hallucinations because of fear and his pride, and he was a dry alcoholic that might be "attacked" via alcohol (and it worked). Maybe the hotel thought that Dick and Wendy would have shown more resistance. But the hotel influenced Jack for way longer than it did Dick or Wendy. Jack resisted a few times in the beginning aswell. Maybe Dick or Wendy might have given in after weeks aswell.
Danny just feel so on edge making the connection of his parents “being in love” because they’re laughing and happy in the moment but it still doesn’t feel right- just because something looks okay doesn’t really mean it is okay and through a child’s mind that has to be tough.
i do like how we can get some of danny’s POV when an adult joke is made and they try explaining it to him so he can understand it. still showing his innocence but he’s clearly wise beyond his years, not always a good thing too depending what made him that way ..
I forgot how much I love Hallorann’s character. He has so much personality and I love how he takes to Danny right away. I also really like how he isn’t an expert on the shining by any means, and he has no idea for sure whether what happens at the overlook will harm anyone or not. It’s interesting that Wendy shines a little and Jack is inconclusive.
I think what I did not like was sometimes Dannys perspective. Buuut I am aware that I rarely like reading from childrens perspectives. It just werent my favorite chapters.
