Joel felt totally exhausted when it was finally time for him to walk into the doctor's office. He took a deep breath before he turned the handle to walk in. This time there were two other people waiting in the reception area, and he nodded to the receptionist, took a seat and grabbed a magazine. He did not even look at the other patients, but felt nervous because he could feel the one person staring at him. He felt totally uneasy when he noticed the one patient get up and took a seat right next to him.
"Joel?" he heard the person say and felt his ears turning red.
He put the magazine down and turned his head to the side. The girl looked totally familiar to him but he was so nervous that he could not place her immediately.
"Vanessa..... do you remember me?" he heard a very familiar voice and then instantly knew exactly who it was.
"Oh my word Vanessa McCartney!" then jumped up to give her a hug.
Vanessa grew up in the house next to him and they had been friends since kindergarten. They haven't seen each other since High school.
"So what brings you here Joel..or is it too personal to talk about?"
"No it's okay, I witnessed an accident and let's just say that it somewhat changed my view on life."
"Post traumatic stress then..." she said with a wry smile.
"Let's not talk about me, I'm very surprised to see you here. What a co-incidence! I've often wondered what happened to you? We have to catch up..." he rambled on.
"We sure have to catch up. I'm so glad to have found you."
They exchanged phone numbers and they chatted a little about their younger days. He found out that she was married, but it ended badly. She had no children, and she wasn't dating anyone.
He felt so relaxed talking to her and felt disappointed when Dr Madison called her into her office. While she was in, he thought about all the things they did together when they were small, and what coincidence it was for them to meet. It just felt as if things were falling into place although on the outside it looked like total chaos.
Vanessa was in and out in fifteen minutes, and then it was his turn to go in. He smiled when he saw her and before he went in he asked if he could call her later. She smiled back, and told him that she would be waiting for his call.
He felt more relaxed when he started talking to Doctor Madison today and told her what he did. He felt relieved to get it out in the open, and what she said, startled him into his shoes.
"It was a bold move, and usually it is better to make small changes in your life, just like you...not shaving for a few days, but, we should be afraid of standing still. I think you might have made the right choice..now you have to think what you are going to do with the rest of your life."
It immediately took him back to the words from that fortune cookie that possibly changed his life forever.
Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid of standing still...
He felt much better after his talk with Doctor Madison, and he walked out of there feeling free. When he got to his car he dialed Vanessa's number and she answered after the second ring.
"Do you want to have dinner tonight?"
"I would love to Joel." she gave him her address and he told her that he'll pick her up at seven.
At seven o clock sharp he was parked in front of her apartment. He dialed her number and she said she will be down in a minute. She looked ravishing when she walked out of the building in a bright red dress and he asked her where she wanted to go.
"Chinese restaurant, just a few blocks from here. I just love Chinese food."
"Sounds like my kind of place."
They had a lovely dinner and talked a lot about their past. It just felt right, and Joel felt content for the first time in a very long time. Vanessa worked for an art collector and she was flying to Europe the next month to go and visit some art galleries there.
"Why don't you come with me Joel? It will take your mind of things, and I'm going to be honest with you. I feel as if we were destined to meet at Doctor Madison's office."
Joel nodded.
"I feel exactly the same way Vanessa."
Both of them blushed. They both knew that they were going to see a lot of each other and they both knew that everything was going to work out exactly as it is supposed to.
Joel dropped Vanessa off at home, and while he drove home, he thought about the events of the last few weeks. In some way having a near death experience with the accident, made him feel like a brand new person. Even though it ended badly for that elderly man in the car, it changed his life forever.
The winds were slowly changing and he hoped that it was turning into the right direction.
