Abraham and the Apocalypse… A book in progress, a glimpse of Abraham and Scotty
What’s inside?
At first glance I thought it ugly, of no use, maybe an over-sized paper weight, and began to walk on by but could not. “Break it open and look inside” a voice told me. Why waste my time I thought? Plain and drab on the outside, nothing more. What could be hidden within that could prove different? Still, I could not move on, there’s something there, I could feel it.
I was reminded of Abraham, my best friend. No one cared for Abraham and everyone walked on by. Like the object before me, people, when there were people, always avoided him. Abraham had no friends then or now but myself.
I picked up the object and it was heavy as I knew it would be. It was not far to camp where Abraham waited and I started walking. As I walked I remembered back to that day Abraham and I went camping, the day before the great white light that filled the sky and killed so many. Abraham and myself were lucky having went on a hiking trip into the nearby lava caves when the great white light came.
“Hey Abe”, I yelled as I walked into camp. “Look at what I’ve got”. Abraham came running up with arms flaying about, with the ear to ear grin that never seemed to leave his face. “You’ve got yourself a thunder egg” he exclaimed jumping up and down. I was a little surprised that Abe would have a name for this object let alone know what it was but then again a day never went by that Abe did not surprise.
There were a lot of names for Abraham people used when they were still here. They called Abe names like retard, nit wit, stupid, dummy, all were bad. Sometimes I thought Abe slow but he learned fast and he remembered, he remembered everything. Abe has inside him what I hope I have, that which if everyone possessed there never would have been the great white light. He has a heart, a heart that shines a kaleidoscope of colors with a power that embraces and holds close everyone it touches.
“A thunder egg” I said. “What’s a thunder egg”? Still jumping up and down, I thought he was going to pee his pants, he blurted out “break it open Scotty”.
We were standing next to an outcropping of granite that looked as if it might accommodate the task. I lifted the thunder egg high above my head and with all the strength I could muster I threw the thunder egg against the granite rock. With a loud, deep, hollow popping sound, a large crack appeared. Abraham ran up to the thunder egg and grabbed hold. Looking back at me he yelled “you did it Scotty” as he laid the two halves side by side with the interior exposed.
“Look Scotty, look at all the colors, it seems to go forever, like a little magical world. Have you ever seen anything so wondrous”? I looked at Abraham again as I never have before and thought yes, it is truly wondrous when you can see what’s inside.
