The sea was full of warships. Cruisers, torpedoes, reinforcing supply ships were making their final maneuvers before the bombardment at the port. There was no one in the streets because the people were on high plateaus at the government's command. We were waiting for the bombardment of the Russian Navy, holding our breath with the trenches.
On the horizon, when the sun set on the Black Sea, the bombardment began. The ships' balls exploded together with such a big thunder that we thought our ears would be deaf. There was a flood of fire on us from the sea. The bridge linking of the town with Trabzon and the buildings behind us collapsed, the town remained in the dust. Because the buildings were demolished, our trenches were no longer protected. When the dust went down, the ships intensified the fire in the area where the trenches were located. There was an unrelenting attack, the arsenals of the ships did not finish, some of our soldiers were martyred because of the exploding balls in the trenches, some buried alive in the trenches.
When the bombardment was over, the sun sank, and the environment had become difficult to see. It smells like blood and powder, and my ears were ringing because of the rumble. As all the commanders died, Shakir Corporal took command. He went through the trenches and gathered the survivors. In a deep-dug trench, we were gathered as the last seventeen soldiers remaining alive. There were two young soldiers who were crying and whining, and the corporal rebuked and shup them up.
"I won't let anybody say the army has surrendered the town to the enemy without a single shot. We will not leave here until we will be martyrized." We have placed the three machine guns to crossfire Russian troops. Shakir Corporal put five soldiers in one row behind each machine gun so if the one in front was shot the next could continue. I was in the lead. We were in a deep-dug trench, we had cherry trees in front of us, and they were very unlikely to see us in the twilight of evening.
Shakir Corporal checked the bullet boxes next to the machine gun and said, “I will shoot the ones who shoot before the enemy gets 50 meters closer.”
Russian soldiers landed in groups with boats. They lined up and walked into the city from the port, saying the anthem. My heart was beating fast. When they got close, we started shooting from three directions, as Shakir Corporal said. The machine gun was working perfectly, and empty bullet shells was constantly dropping next to me. We caught them off guard and hit a lot of soldiers. They could not locate us in that panic state, and those who took a shot could not get a positive result. I was firing as if hundreds of our martyrs had joined me. When I finished the bullets in the first box, we tied the second strip, and I kept firing while they were pulling back. Behind the hill, we had two old cannons. When we fired them, there was a great panic in the enemy. Those who survived hurried on their boats and retreated to the ships. I burned so many bullets that there's not a single leaf left on the tree in front of me.
We began to play horon in the trench with joy and enthusiasm. One of the friends who played horon was bleeding on the cheek. Turns out a shrapnel had opened a hole in his cheek, and he didn't notice it. We just rolled his cheek with a bandage and went on to the horon.
Once the Russians got past panic, they went back on the boats and landed again. A shot of artillery lifted the earth in front of me and buried me in the trench. This time I couldn't find time to get out of the ground and head the machine gun. The soil on me was loose, I could breathe better and worse, and I waited without moving. I heard a few hand-held shots and Russian conversations. I held my breath, squeezed my teeth. I said to myself, ‘Suppose you're dead, Ali Riza, if they take you, they'll rip you apart.’ I waited until my body was relaxed and the soldiers passed by me. The voices stopped, I waited a little longer, and then I went out and hide in the darkness and went to a village of the town, from there to the plateau.
My grandson loves the stories of occupation, and he said, "You let this one go and tell the other one."
After the Bolshevik Revolution, the Russians retreated from the Black Sea, and when the war was won under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha, we returned to our vineyards and gardens. By the way, I got married, and had children.
In 1928, when the weather was warm and the grass in the village was not enough for cattle and sheep, we went to the highlands as it was at the beginning of every summer. At that time, there were no cars or tracks. With two horses, one donkey, eight cattle and forty sheep, and after a twelve-hour walk we arrived on the highland.
The highland was cool and hazy. We entered our ancestral highland hut, set fire and settled. I like the flower and insect of the highland, so I wanted to go out and walk in the prairie. In the ambush, I saw something round with a dome that looked like a giant rounded bread. I guess my eyes were misleading. What was that car-sized iron thing doing on the lawn of the plateau? I walked a little further and approached it. Meanwhile, a slight wind blew up and scattered the smoke around. It was not neither in a plane form, nor in a ship form, it was a strange vehicle. I turned around and immediately informed my brother Ilyas. We've got to get our rifles up and discuss what we're going to do.
"Let's tell the captain of the ship not to invade our land, " İlyas said.
I said, “Brother Ilyas, the ship would be at sea.”
I think it was a small plane with no wings and no propeller, it has landed directly from the sky as the grass in the area was not crushed. This could have been a vehicle that the foreigners have newly discovered, perhaps our country was being invaded secretly, and it was necessary to make a report to the government.
"Let's go talk to the pilot of the small airplane" İlyas said. He's stubborn, he doesn't like to deal with government and gendarme, he prefers to do everything for himself.
There was a door on the plane. Ilyas pointed the rifle, he prepared to shoot at the door. Brother Ilyas are you unconscious, you will shoot at the plane, and it will wave a bomb to you, and we will deliver our spirit to this mountainside.
"It's not a plane, it's an airship" İlyas said.
I touched the surface of the airship, it was made of metal material that resembles aluminum, and I hand-clicked the door. Then I cried out as much as I can, “Who are you, my countrymen?”. We waited a while, there was no sound.
“They were ashamed of us, let's go home, eat, and then observe from afar” İlyas said.
“It’s body is not fully seated on the ground, it will not interfere with the sheep and the cattle.” I said.
When we just finished our meal, our shepherd dog started barking. The door of the airship was opened and turned into a small ramp, a four-wheeled vehicle like a grocery cart landed on the ground and started digging the ground with its arm. İlyas woke up with a rustle and walked to the side of the ship, so I followed him. Three metal birds from the gate of the ship, like a bat, began to fly towards us. We picked up the rifles and fired them right away. The flares bounced off their wings and came back. Both the metal birds and four-wheeled vehicle went back into the ship immediately, the door closed.
"I don't understand who these people are" said İlyas and fired his gun. The bullet bounced back on the ship without a trace.” Let’s not report to the government for now, " İlyas said.
The neighbors turned the place into a shrine in two days, because grass under the ship grew a little too much, even though the government had not yet known. There were people who made a wish and clothed the leg of the ship, some people brought their patients and laid them under it for healing, and others prayed under it; the vessel had been the entertainment subject of the people.
The next day, I was skeptical that the foreigners had a bad plan, so I went and told the governor about the situation. The governor didn't believe what I told. "Master, I am a veteran of the independence war, I read this newspaper every day, and I am not an ignorant man." I said.
When the soldiers checked and realized I was telling the truth, they declared the place a restricted area and threw us out. "Who are you throwing, you did not know anything if I didn't report?" I said. The government took away the horon players, the wishers and the worshippers, along with us. They brought large cannons with wheels and bombarded the airship. Even though the airship fell with the weight of the cannons that hit, it stood up on its own every time, and there was no trace on it.
I heard from the government clerk that the subject went to the ears of president, he was angry at them because of their unconscious work, he was coming to Trabzon.
Three days later, Mustafa Kemal Pasha came to our highland on the horse. He had riders' pants on, long black boots on his feet, a cap on his head. He brought experts with him from the plane community. There was a glow in his blue eyes, as if his gaze were piercing a hole, and he was reading all that was going on in our heart. I told Mustafa Kemal Pasha that we were veterans of the war of independence, that we were grateful to him for saving our country, and that we were ready to fight again if we were to face the enemies again. Pasha did not like the mention of war and hand kissing ceremony, brought the subject to the airship and things inside. After İlyas told what happened, he said that people believed Pasha came from the sky like the air vessel. It was disrespectful to pronounce such absurd ideas in the face of the Pasha, and I wish I had been in the ground at that moment.
“Don't believe in such hearsays, my child,” said the Pasha, laughing, and he began to move towards the airship with his entourage. Because they didn't let us in, Ilyas and I went to a hill where we could see what was going on. As Mustafa Kemal Pasha came closer, the door of the airship opened, and three metal birds began to fly steadily at his eye level. Did the Pasha was able to communicate with them, if he could, what did he tell them, all of which was a mystery for me. After Pasha left, the birds went down to the ground as if they were playing horon. Then they took the airship and left our land as they came.

İki İşgal
Denizin üstü silme savaş gemisi doluydu. Kruvazörler, torpidolar, destekçi ikmal gemileri limanda bombardıman öncesi son manevralarını yapıyordu. Şehir ahalisi hükümetin talimatıyla yaylalara çekilmiş olduğundan sokaklarda kimse yoktu. Siperlerle nefesimizi tutmuş Rus donanmasının bombardımanını bekliyorduk.
Ufukta, Karadeniz’in üzerinde güneş batarken bombardıman başladı. Gemilerin topları hep birlikte öyle büyük bir gümbürtüyle patladı ki kulaklarımız sağır olacak sandık. Denizden üzerimize bir ateş seli akıyordu. Of’u Trabzon’a bağlayan köprü ve arkasında mevzilendiğimiz binalar yıkıldı, ortalık toz duman içinde kaldı.
Mustafa Kemal Paşa üç gün sonra at üzerinde bizim yaylaya geldi.

May be telling the governor was not such a good idea .You could have kept it to yourself.Pasha could have been somewhat more kind.He should not have taken away the ship.the place of worship is always very close to people's heart and they take it seriously. I had my heart in my mouth while reading about the time when you were burried in trench. 9/10 times you are dead in that situation but luck was on your side that day.
So what do you think the bird like things in the ship were?
I have no idea 😃 May be they visited to learn how to play horon
This is so interesting to read.

Teşekkür ederim görmemişim kurcalamaya başlıyorum :)
I do enjoy period stories where aliens meet our ancestors, like in Stargate, with the ancient Egyptians, or just about every Dr. Who story.
So Mustafa Kemal Pasha ended two occupations, but I don't believe the second is really over. The metal birds will be back, I think, and Ali Riza may yet have a chance to prove himself a hero. :-0
Can't wait to find out what happens next. . .
It is unfortunately a seperate story 🙂 The first occupation is a based on a real story I listened from my grandfather
Well it worked as the opening of a novel, lol, since there is a narrative desire to link the stories.
And besides, surely Mustapha Kemal links all Turkish stories from those days. And maybe still today, as the story continues.
I am just going to learn how to do the horon. It looks like a lot of fun. :)
In my humble opinion you have an exteremely creative mind, you can link anything to everything 😃
