Demi's Homecoming

in #fiction7 years ago

It had been 10 years since Demi saw her mother. It was not that she did not want to see her mother but certain memories prevented her from going back home.

Every year, her mother sent dozens of messages to her, requesting that she returns home even if it was only for a day. Demi continually ignored the call until her pastor in church sent for her one Sunday afternoon, after church service.

Pastor Collins was loved by all. He wasn't the usual new generation pastor but he was sensitive and godly. One other thing that made people like and respect him was that he had the gift of prophecy.

So when pastor Collins, told Demi she needed to go home and see her mother, Demi knew she could no longer run. She reluctantly began to prepare to go to the village. Her mother was excited at the news but Demi was not, she knew one other person who wouldn't be either.

Having secured leave from her workplace, she packed to go to the village for a week. She said her prayers in the morning of the day she proposed to leave, praying specially for strength to face whatever comes up at the village.
Pastor Collins had earlier prayed for her and anointed her too. So in a way, she felt confident that she would be fine . She set out for the park early.

The journey to the village took 9 hours. She had dozed off in the bus, especially because it was a comfortable bus. Alighting from the bus, she took a taxi to her mother's place and she was overwhelmed by the amount of neighbours and family members who came to welcome her.

It eased the tension a bit seeing a lot of heryounger cousins, whom she had often heard about. Later in the evening after her mother had almost overfed her, she sat outside in the moonlight with her mother and her aunty chatting, happily.

Then she remembered her uncle had been nowhere to be found. It was not that she was looking forward to see him but curiousity got the better part of her, so she asked after him.

Immediately, her aunty's countenance changed and within seconds, she burst into tears. Her mother began to console her aunty. Demi was confused, but more eager to know what had happened to her uncle..her uncle who was the major reason she had avoided home for so long.

After much persuation, her mother and aunt decided to take her to him. It was a 15 mins trek to the outskirts of the village and Demi wondered why he was at the outskirts.

Her mother and aunt led her into a tattered shed and there he was, covered in leprosy. Demi screamed...as he sighted her, he began to stretch forth his hands to her pleading and asking for forgiveness..

Demi immediately became vehement NO! , "I will never forgive you". Then she ran out of the shed. Her confused mother and aunty ran after her in tears...wondering what was going on..

Screaming and running after her, her mother kept calling out but Demi did not wait. Her aunt who seemed to know what had happened, called after Demi's mother instead saying " help me beg her...God has fought for her already.."
