Instead of our usual New Year's Eve party, we decided to spend the holiday with my in-laws. For Filipinos, family is everything, and we cherish every opportunity to gather, whether it's a special occasion like New Year's or just a casual weekend get-together.

The house was filled with the familiar warmth and laughter that always accompanies family gatherings. The kitchen was a hub of activity, with everyone pitching in to prepare a delicious feast. We enjoyed cheese boards, guacamole, a fantastic casserole, and plenty of drinks.

We spent the evening playing games, catching up on each other's lives, and sharing some laughs. It was a reminder of how much we cherish these moments together. For Filipinos, family extends beyond immediate blood relatives. It encompasses aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and even close friends who are considered part of the extended family. These bonds are deeply valued and nurtured throughout our lives.

Before the clock struck midnight, I made sure to place rice, cotton, money, and water on the table. These are symbols of good luck, fortune, health, and happiness in the coming year. It's a personal tradition I've always observed, and it adds a special touch to our New Year's Eve celebrations.

Knowing my siblings were already celebrating back home in the Philippines, I made a group call via Messenger. With different time zones, it's sometimes hard to celebrate together in real-time, but technology has truly bridged the gap. I make sure to connect with them on every holiday, and it's a testament to the beauty of the internet – easily connecting us with loved ones, no matter the distance.

As the clock struck midnight, we raised our glasses and toasted to a happy and healthy new year, filled with many more opportunities to celebrate with the people we love, both near and far.
