Layers of Meaning in the Terminator Film Scores

in #film7 years ago (edited)

Some time ago, I wrote about the personal significance of the Terminator films to me. I've rewatched 1 and 2 dozens of times. The more recent films in the series have been disappointing in some ways but still hugely influential on me.

One of the things that's easy to miss about the first two films is how their main themes symbolize the struggle between human and machine. In the first one, there's this constant repetitive metallic clanking in the background. Layered atop that is the sweeping, emotionally gripping orchestral melody.

The relentless clanking represents the forces of Skynet, for whom the war is only a pragmatic undertaking, devoid of drama, and a matter of endurance. The sweeping orchestral melody is the same war but seen from the human perspective. A tempest of emotion. Of heroes, martyrs, and deep meaning.

Combined, it represents both sides of the war and communicates what each of them is subjectively like and what they stand for. The theme itself is the future war.

When you fumigate your house, probably it is not a deeply meaningful, emotional occurrence for you; it's just a tedious job you want over and done with. But for the rats and their babies who die choking and gasping, it is a day of extreme importance and the deepest degree of feeling such simple animals are capable of.

This juxtaposition returns in the T2 theme but intensified. The DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN has the same metallic quality to it, and communicates the severity of it all. The increased urgency and stakes. Skynet is as relentless as before, but has redoubled its efforts, sensing that its end is near.

Interestingly, this time the machine part of the song has changed but the orchestral melody has remained the same, except that it has grown louder/stronger. Symbolizing the turning tides of the war, humanity's resurgence as it struggles to deal the final blow to Skynet.

Nothing in such a well made film is by accident or without meaning. James Cameron's detail oriented brain never fails to infuse every nook, cranny and crevice of his films with rich symbolism. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but I don't think so.

Stay Cozy!

Sort:

Iron Steel used by robots in steel terminator films worn by Wakanda Country in the film Black Panther. Which is better for you? meaning its ability and endurance.

metallic quality

The first two films are outstanding works. James Cameron is an extraordinary storyteller and world builder.

I like your analysis of the musical motifs, I've seen similar musical theme analysis but not for this movie series. You're almost certainly correct as well. The stark differences between man/machine is the very core of these films. Although when Arnold gives the thumbs up in T2 at the end... it gets me every time and makes me think maybe, just maybe, a machine can somehow evolve to be more human in some ways.

Have you heard of the new Terminator film in production?

Evidently its produced by James Cameron and brings back Arnold and Linda Hamilton. Frankly I think these stars may be pushing their expiration date a bit for the full-out action scenes these films usually deliver, but if anyone can pull it off believably, those two can.

Hopefully this will be Cameron returning to the visceral, primal goodness the original two films had in abundance.

Yup, I'm stoked.

Oh, baby, this make the film just more deep in an artistic way. The old action movie were (most of them like Rocky, Rambo AMD Robocop [take that triple "R"]) pretty damm hice films that nowadays can't be recreated.

Just one more comment

For me this is one of the best animes about distopic, biopolitics AMD cops.

You made it looks as if i haven't watched it before, soundtracks of movies are a research on there own.
I think metallic sound is synonymous with moview like that.

Terminator 1 and 2 are my childhood favourites along with maybe Alien and Aliens.

Well now I'm going to have to rewatch at least Terminator 2 in the next few days.

I think part 1 was the best, don't know the reason behind that.
Maybe it's because I was little during the release of part 1 but it was my favorite. I have watched part 1 five to six times. The series was pretty good

Just by listening to these sounds I get reminded by those favorite movies of mine.

...never fails to infuse every nook, cranny and crevice of his films with rich symbolism.

I honestly really think the time will come when we not only watch movies such as terminator’s series, we will be able to witness it ourself. Technology and AI advances every single decade at astonishing rate. I wouldn’t be surprised it will be here among us in the next 10 years.
BTW: Terminator 1,2 my favorites. The rest boring.

Brings back memories
I've watched the Terminator series so many times that I still remember the scenes clearly.

Part 1 is one my top 5 sci fi films of all time. Part I loved when it came out, I was a teenager then, now almost every line by Edward Furlong makes me cringe a bit. Still good movie with effects that were awesome for the 90s. Never saw any of the later sequels

You're not missing much. Though Genisys was alright.

I always get a hankering for the Terminator when I think about its musical score. It works so perfectly with the movie, like when Sarah Connor found her way into the techno club and the beat is up and you think she might be ok, and then shit goes down and the music follows with it perfectly.

More than the alarming Dun Dun sound...those organ pipes vibrations have an overwhelming grab on me...maybe because of nostalgia but I thimk it is more because they are epic
Another amazing soundtrack is the one of my avatar ..Metal Gear Solid 1... Similar story of man against machines which are man made....the irony
The only major difference is that while the hero in terminator is actually a cyborg in MGS it actually a human fighting cyborgs soldiers and ultimately a nuclear equipped robot code named..."metal gear solid"
:)
Here is a taste

Yup. I am familiar with Metal Gear. I played Twin Snakes on Gamecube.

best game ever ... the jews screwed Hideo Kojima later because he revealed a lot of darpa and gov secret in that game... he is out of business now
