TheBloodyCritique’s ‘The Disaster Artist’ Film Review
The Disaster Artist is a biographical comedy/bromance film directed by and starring James Franco, it’s based on the true story behind what’s now considered a cult classic and one of the greatest bad movies ever made, The Room, which was written, directed and produced by Tommy Wiseau who also plays the lead role! James Franco stars as Tommy Wiseau and the film’s about his friendship with Greg Sestero, played by James Franco’s brother Dave Franco. After meeting Tommy in an acting class Greg quickly grows fond of his eccentric personality and the two become close friends, Tommy happens to have an apartment in LA and the two go and live there with dreams of being big movie stars! Not quite achieving the success they’d imagined Greg suggests they make their own movie which leads to Tommy creating The Room!
I hadn’t seen The Room until recently, I’d heard of it and I was aware of it though, nothing specific just that is was one of the greatest bad movies ever, and with the release of The Disaster Artist I thought it was time I saw it. I wasn’t majorly into it, I laughed a few times but overall I was disappointed, with the right atmosphere I can see loving it, so it could have just been my mood! Either way, I wasn’t really into it, however, after having just finished The Disaster Artist I’ve fallen in love with the idea of it, I went into this knowing nothing of the story behind The Room or Tommy Wiseau as a person and new light has been shed, for me at least, the full picture is clear now and it’s kind of beautiful!
James Franco delivers possibly the best performance of his career! He captures the essence of Tommy Wiseau perfectly and I absolutely love the character, he’s strange, he’s unique and he seems pure, like a child or an alien or something, you can’t not love the guy! Dave Franco also does a great job as Greg, the film is directly based on the real life Greg Sestero’s book about his experience meeting Tommy and seeing first-hand the creation of The Room, we see the story through his eyes and Dave Franco was great in the role. Seth Rogan plays Sandy Schklair, the script supervisor who ends up having to help with the direction, but he’s pretty much just Seth Rogan, it works, he was okay, he’s not in as major a role as the promotion suggests but he’s there enough.
The Disaster Artist is an extremely entertaining experience, I thoroughly enjoyed it and considering myself a member of the film fan community I now feel privy to the phenomenon of The Room being this cult classic and the love people have for it, I get it now! As I mentioned, I watched The Room first and I feel like having experienced it beforehand I was able to fully appreciate the complete impact of The Disaster Artist, if I hadn’t I don’t think it would have landed as well as it did, it’s not essential I suppose but I wouldn’t definitely recommend doing the same, it might work the other way though, watching this and then watching The Room, I think my way’s better though! Go with my way, my way guarantees you get the full effect of The Disaster Artist, yeah!
So yeah, I loved this movie, it’s hilarious, I don’t think I’ve mentioned that yet and it’s important with The Disaster Artist being a comedy and all! It’s consistently funny, I laughed out loud multiple times throughout and I have a fantastic sense of humour! It’s a very funny film and I would 100% recommend it to everyone! Watch The Room first though. The Disaster Artist is a feel good movie, and as well as being hilarious, it’s inspiring and it’s touching. It’s well written and well directed with a standout performance from James Franco, he did a wonderful job with the material and it’s his best work all round, both behind the camera and in front of it, I had a great time watching it and I’m going to give The Disaster Artist 8.1/10.

Every individual someone who created a different director. There are characters we do not like in the film and in other films we can also really like the character of the actor until we adore him. I think that's the best opinion for me. @bloodycritique
