Intro to steemit! Shoutout to my fellow DJs, house heads, disabled folks!

in #film7 years ago (edited)

Hello steemit friends! I thought it was time for an introduction.

Me in downtown ATL with my Adidas swag (I worked for them briefly - retail sucks!) and Bernie stickers.

I'm a 26 year old college student studying film at Georgia State in Atlanta, GA, living downtown right here on the concrete campus. I am a DJ at the greatest college radio station in the country, WRAS 88.5FM, Album 88 (wras.org) and host of Beatscape Lounge and Houseworks. I work part-time at a movie theatre, and enjoy video games, drawing, collecting records, traveling, and of course music and film.

A view of my neighborhood!

Electronic music and in particular house is my life. I like many genres but anything with a good, especially old-school influence is my jam. Some favorite groups and producers of mine include Lone, Groove Armada, William Orbit, Machinedrum, LFO, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Todd Edwards, as well as everything from Nine Inch Nails, Sneaker Pimps, Madonna, Sufjan Stevens, to Björk.

My DJ setup with the mixer at WRAS, plus me trying to mix with a broken hand.

I do study film but I've found myself leaning towards music and DJing house. I truly love it and have a passion for it ever since I visited Smart Bar in Chicago with my dad when I was 21 and heard deep house for the first time from CZ Boogie spinning. I'd always been into electronic music but that started me on my journey to get to GSU, join WRAS, and eventually get to host Houseworks which I've been doing for about a year. I keep it club-ready and old-school with a 90s gay club vibe, but include a little bit of lots of subgenres. I still call myself an aspiring DJ because after a year, I'm technically proficient enough to host the show but I'm trying to save up for my own equipment so I can start playing small gigs publicly rather than over the air. It's my dream to travel and DJ legit clubs that people not to be noticed or to pick up chicks, but for the music, just like Smart Bar in Chicago.

I do still love film and my favorite director is David Fincher, but I love lots of film, Lord of the Rings, Titanic, old Hollywood like Gone With the Wind and African Queen, Silence of the Lambs, Star Wars, Black Swan, Aliens, anything Sophia Coppola, Studio Ghibli, the list goes on.

Some stills from a student project I directed.

I've gotten pretty jaded with the film biz because I just haven't had the time to really commit to it and some of the people have rubbed me the wrong way. I still love it, I just need to find my group of people to work and collaborate with, ideally doing freelance stuff while I also DJ. I'm minoring in Entertainment Media Management and I'd also love to work for a record label like R&S.

Last but not least, when I was 5 years old (1996!) I woke up delirious with a 105 degree fever and was life-flighted from Shelbyville, TN to Vanderbilt in Nashville and was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and my parents were told I wouldn't have a chance. After 13 days in ICU I pulled through, but my legs didn't. After about a month of second opinions and every holistic and therapeutic method under the sun, my parents gave in to the inevitable realization that I would have to lose my legs. I had both legs amputated below the knee that fall and have worn prosthetic legs ever since. I've struggled with my weight my whole life, lost 100 pounds on keto in 2015, but have gained much of it back. I'm determined to lose it though and by my healthiest self, as everything else seems contingent on my weight, due to my disability. It's hard juggling all that with a part-time job and no real money for college, but I'm almost (ALMOST!) done and so ready to move on with my life and finally help my parents for a change the way they've helped me my entire life.

Me with legs and my amazing late aunt Sherry, age 4-5

Bonus sweet kicks!

I'm a big architecture fan (if only I could math) and amateur photographer and artist. Also love video games like Minecraft. Thanks for reading and if you we have any shared interests or if you have any questions about amputees or disability, Atlanta, college radio, or anything at all, please comment! Thanks!

Love me some Minecraft (this is the Ba Sing Se Project), Sims, Zelda, among many others

I enjoyed reading this. Thanks for sharing. Don't give up on your dreams in the film business if you feel its something that you'd like to pursue.

Thanks so much! I’m definitely not giving up, my interests have just broadened. Luckily with these two paths I can do both more or less, and they’re not totally unrelated.

That makes sense. Good luck with it all

Great Story about yourself! Loved the read. I'm curious about your mixes so I followed you :) I'm producing electronic music using my hardware gear (no computer) if you like you can check out my jams. Again, welcome to Steemit @ehrgeiz!

Welcome to Steemit! Is your username related to the FF7 fightan game by chance?

Thank you! I get that a lot, but I’ve actually only played the game once years and years ago. Ehrgeiz means “ambition” in German.
