My Favourite Movies of All Time

in #film7 years ago

As a comment to my introduction post, fellow Steemian @nathan290595 asked me, what my favourite movie was. Just like I answered in my comment, that is hard to say. I love so many movies and my number one favourite movie probably would change hourly. That being said, there are a few movies I have a special connection with. I want to write about those movies. These are in no particular order, just how they came to my head.

Oldboy

About as hard as it is to have one favourite movie, it's as hard to have just one favourite director. But if you asked me to give one, chance is I would mention Chan-Wook Park. I've loved every movie of his I've seen (7) and by now I'm expecting to love all the others as well. Oldboy was the movie that showed me a world I didn't really think about before. It opened Korean and Asian cinema to me, made me more interested.

It also just showed me how awesome movies can be, because if you haven't seen Oldboy, watch it right now. It is one of my favourites just because it is really one of the best movies ever made. Not only is it well shot and well edited, looking beautiful and has great acting, but it also has just a jaw-dropping story that will keep you interested and wondering what is going on.

Braindead aka Dead Alive

I love Peter Jackson and I will also be an apologist of his movies, because he just loves movies. You see that all throughout his filmography, just look at the bonus documentaries on all the Lord of the Rings DVDs. But also it's because of how he started. He was a horror fan, shooting movies in his backyard with friends. Braindead might not be very good, but it is my favourite of his movies.

It's not smart and the story is bonkers. But you can see his love for movies in it. And as a horror fan, I have to love Braindead just for the craziness and the perfect gore. This movie is banned in Germany, luckily I got my hands on it. It was probably the first banned movie I owned and watched and it changed me. If you don't know it, it's about a Zombie outbreak in New Zealand. And it's one of the most messed up, funniest movies I have ever seen. It's one I can watch any time of day. And that's why it's on this list.

Ed Wood

Another director I will always stand up for is Tim Burton. He might have changed over the years, yet of the 16 movies of his I've seen, I've liked every single one of them. And my ultimate favourite is Ed Wood. It's the movie about the worst director of all time, Edward D. Wood Jr, starring Johnny Depp as the titular character.

But to me, as much as it is about him, it is also about filmmaking and love for movies. It is also about Bela Lugosi, who I will always love, and most importantly about Tim Burton himself. He managed to make a biopic of a bad director and make it a deeply personal movie. And it is such an optimistic movie, you'll leave it feeling happy and positive. It's criminally underseen and I love it.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

I only recently realised that A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my favourite movies, just because I have seen it too many times to count. It's the movie I probably watched the most. Also it is special to me because I got into horror like everyone does: I was way too young to be watching these kind of movies, met up with a big group of friends and we just watched horror movies all night.

And this is the movie I most vividly remember watching with all the others, it changed my life in a way that is miniscule yet gigantic. Freddy is also still my favourite Slasher villain, no questions asked. For anyone who doesn't know the movie... what is wrong with you? But also it's about a serial murderer, killing people in their dreams. It's just perfect for horror movies.

Before Sunrise

Yes, I am a big horror nut. Yet, for a long time I thought romance movies were for girls. Or boring. Or at least not for me. Also I didn't care much about Ethan Hawke, he sucked in the Purge, so I didn't like him. But I wanted to broaden my horizon. So at one point I watched Before Sunrise. And it changed my mind completely, on romance movies and on Ethan Hawke.

It's about two people, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy, meeting in a train and then spending a day in Austria. It's just a movie of two people talking for 90 minutes. And watch them fall in love. And, let's be real here, falling in love with them. It's just beautiful, many long shots, much is improvised, but that just makes it feel more real. Also, check out the follow-ups, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, they are as great.

Night of the Living Dead

Last but not least, a final horror movie. And I feel like I don't even have to talk about it. It is the mother of all Zombie movies. It was made on no budget. And because of a few mistakes it actually barely made any money. It is one of the most progressive movies of all time, it changed movies forever.

It's another one of those movies that I love because it is just perfect. Also because Zombies are great. I own at least three or four different versions of it because you can get it anywhere, even on YouTube.

There are so many more, I could go on listing movies forever, because I just love movies. But this is just a little taste of my knowledge and interest on movies. If you like this list, please resteem it and give it a like! Also please tell me your favourite movies as well as recommendations on what I should watch or write about. Thanks for reading.
