[ESP/ENG] Fugitiva

The power of violence in film is truly endless: it can be funny, it can be scary, it can be tragic and poignant. Sometimes, it can be all of the above, specially if you live in Venezuela, one of the world's most violent countries.

I've always been fascinated by action films, and as a child of the 90's (a truly excellent decade for action films) and as a latino, sometimes I feel like I had no choice but to make Fugitiva.

Fugitiva is the story of a woman who is wrongfully imprisoned by a corrupt cop. She escapes, and then goes on a bare-knuckled rampage to exact bloody revenge. Shot on RED, with original salsa and rock music blaring in the background, this is a personal tribute to martial arts action cinema and a true labor of love by the entire team, who designed and rehearsed the fight choreography for six months.

Part telenovela, part shonen anime and part grindhouse B-movie, Fugitiva is kind of a multi-scoop sundae of the stuff one would find in a Venezuelan VHS store from the 90s.

Story-wise, we were determined to make a story that's empowering for women, in a way that's not all that typical of the genre. We wanted to show powerful, cool, beautiful women who aren't needlessly sexualized, or constrained by standards like being glamourous, dainty or delicate. We also didn't want the inciting incident to be sexual in nature: it's a classic revenge plot about power and decency, rather than exploitation.
