Going From Film Fanatic to Filmmaker

If Steemit hadn't existed, I probably would've stopped writing a lot time ago. If I had stopped, I wouldn't be writing this post about a few significant upcoming changes in my life.

A few weeks ago I wrote about having a college interview, well, I never wrote a follow-up post about how that went or what's happening. In short: I got an offer.

In a longer, more detailed description of the events following the interview: despite my total social idiocy, I managed to get an offer for a filmmaking course in college that I'm --at least on paper -- not actually qualified for. During the interview, which was meant to last 10 minutes, I ended up rambling about my love for Wong kar-wai's Fallen Angels (watch it) and talking about how over the last few years and up to now I've been using 35mm film cameras and digital ones for photography, on top of using various types of editing software to refine my creations.

I've managed to skip the original course I applied for, saving me an entire year of studying and money, and get into a higher level course that would allow me to not only start working in film with the necessary qualifications it gives, but the ability to pursue even higher education in university.

I'd like to think that this was a result of the years spent watching films and television shows, but also writing about them all and gaining a deeper understanding of the entire process of their creations. Taking the time to really understand the craft of filmmaking and actively searching for ways in which its potential been pushed by creatives.

Assuming all student finance is handled well and I get the student loan, I'll be attending college towards the end of the year. It's pretty terrifying given I spent so many years basically doing nothing but finance and whatever hobbies I felt like doing whenever I felt like doing them, but I have to admit I'm more excited. I can't wait to learn more about this world and push my very own creative potential with the right equipment alongside other creatives attempting to do the same.

Oh, and enjoy the penguin picture. I took it with @irial a few weeks ago.

Congrats on joining the class and for starting a new chapter in your life driven by your passions. It’s a scary thing to do. Film school is a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy it. Fallen Angels is on of my favorite films and WKW is an inspiration, even when the film isn’t firing on all cylinders.

I have a feeling it's the start of a whole lot of fun, for sure. It's rare, but for once the excitement outweighs the sheer anxiety, haha.

I wouldn't have watched Fallen Angels if @eeks hadn't recommended it a while ago after I posted a review of Chungking Express!

That’s great! need to revisit that film asap.

Nice, good to hear!
Same story here, without Steem I wouldn't have made a lot of pictures for my blog.
Keeps you focussed and creative.

Focus, creativity and why not a little bit of luck? After all, it's an extremely competitive field.

Go for it, @namiks!
