Yesterday I watched the movie Le bonheur (1965) for the second time, the first time I saw it was just a day before. This shows what a great impression it made on me, since I rarely watch movies for few times, especially in such a short period.
It was directed by Agnès Varda, a famous Belgian-born French director, who’s been called the mother of the French New Wave.
It is a story about love, on the surface it may seem as a faritale-like story, simple and unrealistic. But, as you go deeper into relationships between characters, symbolics of their gestures, also the symbolics of object shown in the scenes, you slowly realize that it is not as simple as it may seem. You see a happy family going to the countryside on weekends, and during working days living a simple everyday life full of tenderness, effort and care. But everything is seriously questioned after some unexpected events that follow.
The film left me in doubt about the true nature of love and happiness. What makes love authentic and mature? Is being happy our choice or a consequence of what we feel, which, in most cases, we can’t control?
Is it possible to stay happy during the autumn of life, after tasting the pure bliss and heaven of intensive summer?
