I’ve never really been a fan of the X-Men film franchise, in fact the only one I’ve really admired is Logan. I don’t have much of a history with the comics either so I can’t say if I liked them or not, I never read them. I skipped this one, X-Men: Apocalypse, when it was initially released and, again, when it hit the DVD market. In truth, I have no interest in seeing this one but I was a little lost on what to watch tonight (I have a list but I keep deviating from it and I had a half-developed idea of doing the whole X-Men but I really didn’t want to sit through it all again so this one will have to suffice).

Apparently a character called Apocalypse wakes up and tries to destroy the world. Professor X and the X-Men have to stop him. This is the younger cast, not the original cast. The movie contradicts pretty much everything that came before. While I’m not a stickler for “canon,” this purports to be a direct sequel to previous films.

It’s entertaining enough I guess but it’s really not good. It takes forever to get going and then goes on a long time. Some visual effects are great, some are cheesy. There are too many characters to keep track of, forcing many to be given short shrift and some story points just don’t make sense.

Plus they seemed to be really reaching to get that Wolverine cameo. Olivia Munn is wasted in this film, as is Lucas Till from the rebooted MacGyver. Jennifer Lawrence has been kind of made the hero of the series, which is odd because Mystique is supposed to be on the bad side.

Meh.
