If you are into movies - I guess if you read my movie posts, you probably are - you might want to check out Letterboxd. If you haven't already done so.
Letterboxd - Keeping track of your movies
In Letterboxd, you can keep an overview of the films you've watched, view trailers, get extra movie info, make lists, check what other people watch, keep a movie diary, write reviews, and so on and so on. And a great thing is that you can use it for free and it looks and works pretty good.
I recently realized that - now I write movie posts - it might be useful to use my Letterboxd as a reference and source of inspiration. Just now, I opened my Letterboxd account to get an overview of the films that I've watched so far. At least those films that I've seen and can remember.
I estimate that I've watched 5000 to 6000 films so far. But, with the help op this app, I could only find and remember a little over 3000 films that I've seen for sure.
Lists of Favorites
A while ago, I decided to make a couple of lists (favorite films per decade, for instance) and I chose to use one of these lists as inspiration for today's post.
Instead of writing a long post on one single movie, today's writing will be short. I will present a list of 16 of the best films I've seen this century ( > 2000 ) and a short explanation what I liked about these titles:

The Lobster
I recently saw the latest film of this promising Greek director, The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The Lobster is the movie he made before. Let's just say that it has one of the best screenplays I've seen in a long time. It's very original and is at times hilarious. But this humor is often countered with quite gruesome scenes. This seems to be one of the trademarks of this director (Dogtooth, Alps). No matter what, this is now one of my very favorite black comedies.
Nebraska
Alexander Payne, who also brought us the lovely roadmovie Sideways, did it again. Now this is a totally different road movie and it's not just a comedy but could also be considered a drama. Not sure how to capture it in words. Just give it a watch ;)
Jagten (The Hunt)
A powerful drama about what happens to a community when they have to choose whether to believe a small girl or an adult man.
We need to talk about Kevin
Yet another powerful drama by my favorite female filmmaker, Lynne Ramsay. Check out the trailer to find out if you're up for watching this.
Drive
One of my very favorite action movies of this decennia. A film that feels and sounds like a music video in the best way possible. It made me fall in love with retro new wave music!
Nightcrawler
A film that is indeed as cool as its title and poster. It made me once again a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, probably one of the best (American) actors of his generation.
Her
One of the most amazing sci-fi films that I've seen the past decade, with a very original, hilarious premise and a great screenplay.
Under the Skin
It's easy to see that this film was directed by a music video director. Although it sometimes seems to lack in storytelling (logic), it easily makes up for that in visuals and soundtrack. Treat this as an experience.
Amour
An atypical movie by Michael Haneke, who usually shocks us with his gruesome human drama/ home invasion horror films. This is a very realistic and heartfelt drama around dementia.
A Separation
One of the best foreign films that I've seen in a long time and yet another 'drama'.
Berberian Sound Studio
This blends a couple of elements that I really like: suspense, music and B-movies. Such a unique mix. If you're into music/ sound and movies, how can you not love this?
Red State
Probably the best - and most underrated film - by Kevin Smith who is addressing a very sensitive issue, the extremes of religion/ fundamentalism in the United States.
Force Majeure
I blogged about this film two days ago:
Blue Ruin
I find it very hard to describe the above film and to put my finger on the exact reasons why it made such an impact on me. Let's just say that it's a mix of elements (from visuals, overall feel and acting to storytelling) that just really seems to work. Watch it and judge for yourself.
Sightseers & Prince Avalanche
Two of the best comedies that I've seen in the last couple of years, for different reasons. If you're into comedies and you want to see something different, pick one of these.

"A separation" is indeed one of the greatest films to have in the recent times. Lobster , yes pretty dense too.Need to see again. Saw his recent "The killing of Sacred deer" ?. Heard its good. Hunt is long time due. Interesting haneke's selection. Haven't seen this. I have seen only two of his films. Both are great. "Cache" and "White ribbon" . Both are highly recommended films. :)
Thanks for your reply!
I have seen many films from Haneke - also the two films that you mention - and those are indeed worth watching. He is one of a few directors who actually made a remake of their own film, in his case: Funny Games. I saw the original version but haven't seen the US remake (yet).
His films are always interesting but at times hard/ painful too watch and definitely not everyone's cup of tea. In my opinion, he makes the kind of films that you don't watch repetitively but seeing them once is definitely worth it.
Completely agreed about haneke. Nice list too, I forgot to say this. i will pick one or two :)
By asghar farhadi have u seen "Beautiful city" (2004) ? One of the best iranian films , i prefer this a bit more than a separation (Nothing to take away from a separation though, just i loved it even more for it's multi layered texture) . I guess u might have seen it :)
I don't remember having seen that film. I will put it on my 'to watch' list. I think I've seen very few Iranian films, perhaps a handful. The only place to see them, I guess, is on film festivals or in arthouse cinemas. Although, that might be changing.
Thanks for the recommendation!
You are the ultimate movie man ;)
Stay passionate, stay blessed !
Thank you for your kind words, asad!
Nice. :) I wrote down a few titles on my to-watch list. ;)
Wow! I’m a huge movie buff and I have to say I have not seen one of your favorite comedies or best movie lists. Now I have movies to watch! Thank you for your suggestions and write ups. I look forward to seeing them all!
First of all, nice to have met you today through my buddy @whatamidoing 's Dead Post initiative :)
That is indeed pretty amazing and you're very welcome. I
studied film for 7 years in University and also spend at least that same amount of years making films, so I'm not exaggerating if I say I've seen more than 5000 movies.
Besides that, I developed an atypical taste in movies and like to highlight those to others. Why would I talk about well known films, if I can also write about lesser known gems, right? ;)
I'm looking forward to keep sharing these lesser known titles with people like you. And, if you're looking for more specific advice (per (sub)genre, decade, country and so on), don't hesitate to ask.
Bye for now!
Nice to meet you too and I'm glad I can get some official recommendations from aficionado! Now that I looked through the list I may have seen a few. But no worries, I have Amazon and Netflix so I should manage to find one of these. Do you have these channels where you are living?
People like me? What the cheese? LOL! I'm an avid movie goer man, take it easy.
I am subscribed to Netflix. We hardly use Amazon in the Netherlands and definitely not for watching movies.
I see. Tons of movies on Amazon That Netflix doesn’t have. FYI. :p
By the way, if you want to center images or text, you can do so with

text or image link

;^]I am a leftie (left handed) and I do not necessarily care about images being centered. To be honest, I kind of like them being on the left side of the screen. I will keep your advice in mind though ;)
