I had another Skype session with Ted today. Also did some really light filming, both tonight and yesterday night, trying to get into character for episode 5.
I pinky promised Ted that I will deliver the footage for this episode to him ( soon ) after Friday. This means that I've got two more nights to play around. I will need those two nights, it will make the episode better.
A week and a half ago, I wrote that Ted and I added a musician to the project. He's a friendy Canadian fellow. You can listen to his music here on Choon and find him on Steemit under the name @sequentialvibe.
Today I wanted to tell you that filmmaking is often also about not doing / not filming something that you had planned on before. To kill your so called darlings, before they are even born/ filmed.
The following email convo with sequentialvibe is an example of that:
Me ( 8 days ago ):
Hi there buddy,
I am not sure if you get notified of posts that you're tagged in but I just wanted to let you know that episode 1 of Tunnels Of The Shadow People will likely be released in three days. Episode 2 a week later and so on...
We probably won't use your music before episode 5, so there's plenty of time to talk beforehand :>)
If you've got any questions, feel free to reply to this email or, if you want quicker answers, reach out to me on Discord.
Have an awesome day!
@sequentialvibe replied the same day:
Hey Vincent,
Good to more directly connect with you! This all sounds great!
Yesterday, I reached out to the guy again. Ted and I had some more clarity about episode 5 and I had to ask a question that I hoped sequentialvibe could answer:
Me:
Hope you're well, surviving the Canadian cold. I am pretty cosy since I got a wood burner installed last Saturday.
I have a short sound related question for you...
Do you know of any way to fake the sound of a record player that starts playing and the sound of the same machine that stops playing ( due to a power cut. IOW: the sound of the needle scratching over a record that stops rotating.
Ted and I are thinking of adding a spooky scene in episode 5 and are considering using one of your spooky tracks for that that is being played in my character's living room.
As I don't have your music on vinyl ( yet ), we would need to fake that effect.
Have an awesome day and I'm looking forward to hearing from you :>)
Vincent
Sequentialvibe then got back to me:
Hi Vincent,
Stoves are awesome for heat! It is warmer here this week.
How about adding this same to the music end?
I did some more thinking and informed Ted today that I felt the whole record player part didn't really fit into episode 5 no matter how much I liked it. He listened to me and agreed. Earlier tonight, I sent the following message to sequentialvibe to notify him about this:
Me:
Thanks for the quick reply.
I had a talk with Ted today and - in the end - the record player scene does not really fit in episode 5.
So I'm afraid you need to wait a little bit longer for your music to star in Tunnels of the Shadow People.
We still seriously consider to make episode 7 or 8 into something close to a music video, edited to an entire song of you. It might be a nice way to promote your new album, now I think of it ;>)
Happy Halloween,
Vincent
He replied soon afterwards, telling me that it was alright and that he trusts my creative vision.
So, today I managed to share something with you about the filmmaking process of Tunnels of the Shadow People that will never be seen in the final product. In the end, it's all about making choices and this seemed to be the right one.
By the way, besides the fact that playing a record did not really fit the scene, another issue was not having the music I wanna play ( a song by sequentialvibe ) on a record. I lately asked him if he had ever thought of releasing some of his work on vinyl. If so, I would certainly buy it.
He soon got back to me
That would be awesome! Can't wait to add it to my record collection :>)
Alright, I'm gonna end it here for today. Two more days until episode 2 of Tunnels of the Shadow People will be released. Haven't seen Part 1 yet? then here's a link:
The film industry is a very interesting art for the experienced, good luck, greetings.
Not just for the experienced...
Thank you :>)
P.S. I'm an independent microbudget filmmaker, that means I'm actually working outside the film industry
With pleasure, independence is great. I wish you a successful career.
Thank you and have a great day! :>)
