True Lies (film): One of my favorite Arnie films

in #films6 years ago (edited)

In the past few days I have focused on a couple of Arnold Schwarzenegger films, so I figured I may as well talk about what I consider to be one of his most entertaining.

Arnold plays the role of Harry Tasker, a relatively boring computer salesman with a lot of secrets that he must keep from everyone he knows, including and especially his family, who are completely unaware of his double life. He has the usual suburban house with a manicured garden, a family dog, and of course a troublesome teenage daughter.

He occassionally goes on "business trips" where he is actually infiltrating compounds on the other side of the planet (IE not selling computers) and he is, unsurprisingly, a one-man-army of sorts. His agency is called the "Omega Sector" and all the people involved in the agency help him cover and well, lie to his family about what he is really up to.

There are so many reasons to love this movie: The action packed scenarios, the power of the Omega Sector, Jamie Lee Curtis' jaw-dropping transition, and of course the comedic elements of the movie that are brought on by Tom Arnold and especially Bill Paxton, who is absolutely phenomenal as a sleazebag used car salesman who pretends to be a spy in order to score dates.

The film stays engaging the entire way through, and even though it is still and Schwarzenegger film, so it is obvious what the ending is going to be, the movie remains fun for the actually quite long runtime of over 2 hours.

If you haven't seen this movie, i highly recommend that you make time for it as soon as you can. I have seen this movie at least 20 times and will watch it again today. It made hundreds of millions of dollars globally and it is easy for me to understand why. This is the highest rating I feel can possibly be given to action comedies with predictable endings.

Have you watched Future Man?

If not, do it right away. There is this one hilarious episode titled Pandora’s Mailbox where the main characters have to go to the future to get some "Cameronium". They end up breaking into James Cameron's impenetrable compound which is controlled by a sentient robot who is programmed to protect the house. The whole episode is chock full of lines from Cameron movies (including True Lies). It is ultimately cheesy but just so awesome.

So definitely check it out. I can't remember if we saw it on netflix or hulu.

I can't wait for season 2.

ohh, thanks for the tip pal. I will put this on the list for sure

An interesting fact is that Arnold himself came to James Cameron with the idea of the film after seeing the French comedy film “La Totale!”. Schwarzenegger was interested in the story of an international spy, whose double life led him to complicated family relations. Arnold was fascinated by the idea of the film: on the one hand, it was a superhero who influenced world events, and on the other, he was not able to cope with smaller problems and was defeated in family life.
Cameron also liked the idea, and he acted not only as a director, but as a screenwriter and producer of the film. In general, James is one of the most talented directors in Hollywood, as he has a film that is not a real hit. He shoots, maybe not so often, but all the films are simply stunning with their scope, inimitable atmosphere, and in cases with “True Lies” they also have excellent humor.
I will not forget the strip scene at the hotel with the transformation of Jamie Lee Curtis into a sex bomb. Very impressive.

Interesting extra tidbits there. I didn't know that about La Totale

James Cameron has directed some fantastic action movies during his career (Aliens, the first two Terminator movies, The Abyss, Titanic--that boat action was like totally awesome!!), but none were as funny as True Lies is. Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator, Eraser, the Governor of California) is Harry Tasker, a computer programming father by day, James Bond by night, working for a top secret government agency that is beyond the CIA and run by Charlton Heston. Tom Arnold, in his first dramatic role, plays Harry's partner, Gib, and is the smartass, class clown of the agency. Schwarzenegger and Arnold have a fantastic chemistry, creating the movie's biggest laughs. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Harry's under-appreciated wife, Helen, who flirts with the idea of leaving Harry for a used-car salesman, played with uber-confidence by Bill Paxson. Helen finds out the true identity of her husband in another funny scene where both are captured by Arab terrorists with help from a truth serum. The action part of True Lies comes from Harry trying to track down the nuclear bomb that has been stolen by the terrorists. A wonderfully shot escape scene on the bridge that connects the Florida Keys to the mainland is the pinnacle of True Lies. An action film that does not take itself too seriously (notice all of the silly Arnold-lines peppered throughout the movie, my personal favorite being "you're fired!" before Trump thought of it), True Lies is wildly entertaining, so much so that you almost forget Tom Arnold was married to Roseanne.

The best actor ever!

Arnold's films were absolute gold in the 80s and 90s. Loved all of them, and still can't pick out a favourite. Oh...maybe Commando

Surprisingly this is one of the Arnold's movies that I have least seen, and I was always his fan as a kid. I should check it out one of these days
