As a result of a European court ruling in 2016 in which the court found that Apple owed the Irish revenue 13.1 billion in taxes, Apple have paid their 13.1 billion plus 1.9 billion interest to Ireland today. Just think about that for a minute. 15 billion!!!
Ireland's current national debt is 202 billion (€314 per second) so I would of thought this payment may go some way to reducing our massive national debt after the countries collapse in 2008. The country was bailed out by the IMF in 2010.
We have since got back on the rails with debt to GDP ratio down to 68% from 1195 IN 2012 (those were dark days) With Brexit looming this 15 billion may come in handy.
But this is the best part. The Irish government are appealing the decision!!! Yes. They are appealing it. They do not think it is fair for Apple to pay out that much money in fines. The money will be held in an escrow account until after the outcome of the appeal.
Apple has been funnelling money through Ireland for years and our low corporation tax decreases the amount they have to pay in corporate taxes. However monies earned in other countries were funnelled through also and the court decided that the corporation tax had to be paid on this also. They found that there was preferential treatment given by Ireland to Apple. This is where the €13.1 bilion came from. Ireland appealed because their laws state that is not the case. Plus considering Apple's European headquarters are in Cork employing 5000, the Irish government have to be seen to be disgruntled about the decision. I would of loved to be the minister of Finance receiving the information.

Lets appeal but don't go hell for leather if you know what I mean... ring that guy Willie who lost that last case and is fond of the drink."
Now whether they have to be seen to appeal the decision or whether our government are actually pissed off with the EU telling us what we can or can't do remains to be seen.
The Irish are probably at this moment putting forward a crack team of the worst performing upper class lawyers to appeal this decision. If we lose we win and If we win we lose. Thats a funny thing.

I for one would like them to pay what is fair. I know they get away with bloody murder and don't pay taxes because of where their headquarters are. They get away with little to no tax in every country because of this.
Yeah and I looked up their earnings for 2016. 46.5 billion!! I think they can afford it!
It would be criminal if they dodged it all and should pay their fair way. I know they spend a fortune on R and D but it is all built in. A phone to actually put together with all it s parts was in the region of $2.50. Even if you multiplied it by 10 it just shows the profit that these guys make.
Trump tried to get them to come back with a tax sweetener and this may just do it now.
Thats the reason we are appealing. 5000 employees with an average wage of 44k a year which is a very high average. (nomally around 38k). Thats alot of money per year in taxes.
That would be a huge chunk of revenue lost. Maybe they drop it by a billion as a sweetener but can't see it honestly. The back door dodging tax thing is not good and doesn't look good.
