John Roddam Spencer Stanhope was born into a wealthy, prominent family, his father was a member of parliament. He began studying at Oxford and soon chose the direction of art and architecture. From 1853 to 1857 he traveled with George Frederic Watts through Italy and Asia. On his return, he assisted Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the creation of murals for the Hall of the Oxford Union.

Stanhope's art direction can be assigned to the second "wave" of the Prerafaelites Aesthetic Movement. He mainly painted mythological, allegorical and biblical scenes and worked with oil, watercolor and fresco techniques. In order to alleviate his chronic asthma, he regularly traveled to Florence in Italy during the winter season. Stanhope was the uncle and teacher of the famous painter Evelyn De Morgan.
In 1867 he lost his only daughter, Mary, to scarlet fever.
He died in Florence in 1908 at the age of 89, where he had settled permanently since 1880.
