Paul Sérusier ( 1864 – 1927 ) was a French painter, a pioneer of abstract art. After studying philosophy in 1886, Serusier entered the Julian Academy in Paris.
His friend Maurice Denis spoke about Serusier: "In Julian's workshop, Serusier, in a relatively primitive and generally ignorant environment, seemed a beacon of high culture, an inspiration, an intellectual and artistic leader. He was always happy and sociable, a faithful friend and a protector of the weak."

Together with his closest friends: Ranson, Ibel, Maurice Denis, Bonnard, René Pio, Roussel and Vuillard, the young artists form the core of the Nabi group and maintain in close contact with Symbolist poets, composers and the avant-garde theater. Dressing in exotic attire, conducting spiritualism sessions, discussing the problems of the arts, they get together each month for a ritual dinner in a small cafe in the Brady Passage.
Charles Chasset wrote: "The further development of Serusier´s career showed that the main purpose of his mind was to achieve a balance between the private and the common, between his own soul and the world. In this way he would give his idea a mathematical basis, and in the same way he wanted to give mathematics itself a human and religious basis. "Synthesis”, explained Serusier, means “reducing the variety of forms to a small number of shapes that we can imagine: straight lines, multiple angles, circular arcs, and ellipses; when we cross those boundaries, we lose ourselves in a sea of diversity."

Seruzier taught at the Ranson Academy. In addition to his creative work, his theoretical works were also very popular. The artist reflected his vision of the foundations of painting in his work “The ABC of Painting” (1921).
Paul Serusier died on October 7, 1927 in France.
