My parents home also borders a veld, as kids we used to love watching the fires, until one crept into our yard and we panicked too!
I agree about the hair thing, I can go without make up, but nothing irritates me more than a bad hair day!

Yes, it isn't really scary. Except if it comes a little to close! Dirty hair is much worse!!!
But the smell afterwards....and the ash :(
