"Quick! It's needed with water!"
I was dressing when hearing those words - so I didn't get time to put on socks until long after breakfast today. Usually I'm the first to wake up, but this day my son (7) got up first, and he decided to have eggs for breakfast. I was not really sure if I had heard right - how is it possible to put the kitchen on fire while boiling eggs on an electric stove?
While I was on my way down the stairs, I met him, him carrying some object in hands. I was still a bit too sleepy (and also, coming out from a dark bedroom to the lit stairs) to fully realize what it was, but I could see it was producing smoke, and it was a red spot on it. "Go back, take it to the kitchen sink!" I said. While he turned around, flames erupted ... and before he got to the kitchen sink, there was big flames even. I could now see that it was a kitchen towel.
He got the thing under the kitchen sink, turned it on and threw a little bit of water on - not enough, because the flames quickly erupted again. Then more water and things were under control. There were some bakery on the floor. I could now clearly see what had happened - my wife had made some sweet bakeries, wrapped them into a kitchen towel and left it on the stove. When my son had tried to boil eggs, he turned on the wrong plate, and patiently waited and waited and waited and waited for the water to boil.
My wife says the kitchen towel was cotton, I believe it was flax (Linum usitatissimum), at least it wasn't synthetic.
I'm a bit surprised as our stove is pretty modern - it has thermostats, the plates turn off before they get too hot. Apparently I was wrong, it still gets dangerously hot. This is how our electric stove top looks like (he was boiling the eggs behind to the right, the bakery and towel was to the left behind, and he used the pot in front to cool down the skin of the eggs after boiling them):

Thank god your son is save.Fire is always bad when it is out of control.I have faced once in life when I lost a lot of things of my house that was a bad experience thankfully we all were save.
Wow. That was a lucky break @tobixen. Turning on the wrong plate is easily done. Glad everyone, and your house, was OK. 😊
Good to know that you all are safe. One thing came in my mind after seeing your post. We all take fire safety measures at our office or business center. The same should be applicable and practiced at our home. Fire fighting equipment, safety alarm, training to run fire extinguishers should be practiced from individual level. Because, our beloved ones remain at home and their safety is also important. Specially, in my country where I live, this safety part is ignored maximum case at home. One more thing, your son is becoming self dependent at this age that is good but take care about safety. Thanks.
It's quite strict in Norway, and we even have inspections in private homes. We have lots of fire extinguishers, but now I realize we need to go through and test the fire alarms as well. I think it should have been enabled due to the amounts of smoke produced. We probably also should do regular fire drills.
Another thing is on the boats ... for different reasons the risk of a fire is much bigger on a boat than in a regular home. There are very few regulations and no inspections, but on the boat we have like four fire alarms and three CO-alarms plus various extinguishers.
Hope you are all okay and no serious damage was caused. These kitchen accidents sometimes end quite bad.
If I didn't write it clear enough in the post, yes, everyone and everything in order (except for one cake that couldn't be rescued, and the towel), everyone in good mood, lessons (probably?) learned. :-)
7 year old Son got really scared because he is very young and he didn't understood what happened. The good thing is, at that point of time you were there. I can be wrong but in my opinion we should stay with children when they are cooking because sometimes these kind of incidents can happen.@tobixen, In my opinion good to hear that the situation got in control and in my opinion your
Wishing you an great day and stay blessed.
I don't think he got seriously scared (for sure it must have been scary when the flames erupted), I think it was a useful lesson for him.
Just i shared my concern and i agree with your point Lesson.
I really know that feeling and have witnessed that to others also and regarding the situation I guess your son won't boil eggs to soon... It's good that you were at home though to sort things out.
I don't think he got that much scared, I think he will be cooking eggs again pretty soon, but perhaps under supervision. We'll see. At least he managed to turn on the right plate after the fire was put out and finally boil the egg. That egg was actually for me, his egg was already ready. I wonder how he managed that. (probably he used boiling water from the water heater - I specified I wanted my egg a bit harder).
He was ready to make eggs again this morning - but there was no time, he decided to boil eggs just three minutes before he was to run to school.
That's perseverance. Now, at least he learned his lesson and he will be more careful when cooking. I have to admit that I haven't cooked anything at 7...
Phew, that was close. Can't wait for my son being able to cook breakfeast...
i am happy after the fire in the kitchen! your sun is fully safe.
family safety is must in the life.
Ohhhh Thank God.You son is save.fire is so dengerous.fire is out of control.Leakage of gass is to much bad.Happy to see this your son and your home will be save.
It's quite rare with gas stoves in Norway. (my wife have had some plan to install a gas fire in the kitchen for several years already though)

It is scary at how easy a fire can start and get away in a kitchen. Your son learned a new lesson about boiling eggs. Glad to hear that there was a happy ending.
