Friday Fishing Stories - Lobster Hooping

in #fishing7 years ago

Hoop netting for lobsters is a lot of fun. I have been able to go lobster hooping a handful of times with some cousins/friends who have the gear needed to do the lobster hooping.

Here on the west coast of the US, the lobsters are very different then they are on the east coast. The water is much colder, and our lobsters are a bit more compact, hearty, and do not have the big lobster claws like the east coast lobsters do. Here is a picture of me with a couple of legal lobsters:

To catch them, you bait the hoop net, drop the hoop into areas they like (such as rock piles), and then wait an hour or two and pull the hoop up to see if you caught any. Most of the lobsters you catch are too small to keep, so those must be thrown back. The lobster fishing industry is watched very closely, and there are only certain times when you can catch them, you need a special license, and they have to be a minimum size in order to keep.

The lobsters are most active at night, so that is the best time to go lobster hooping. When I have gone hooping, we have used a bigger boat to anchor down and use as the home base, and then use a small skiff to run around the areas we are hooping to drop the nets and bring them back up. The nets are fairly heavy and it is definitely a workout to haul lobster nets by hand all night, but it is very worth it, as the lobsters are delicious… I like to bbq mine on the grill!

Thanks for stopping by!

Lobster rolls sound so good right now. Did you go out of San Pedro?

Hi my friend... mostly we go out to catalina island and hoop out there... fun times!

I have to head out there then soon. Looks like a blast. 35 years here and I've never been to Catalina island. Are there still buffalo there?

Very cool to hunt lobsters, I really think it is delicious in a barbecue on charcoal, but unfortunately there is no one in my area ,But we have crabs, and that picture of sea crabs grilled on charcoal.

I wish for you a happy trip my friend.

All the best for you 😊😉👍 Good luck my dear friend @brian.rrr 👍👍😉

Great looking crabs my friend. I appreciate your input and comments always!

Wow!!! I can’t believe you have gotten to do this!!! I’m not sure if I’ve mentikned it to you but I am an east coaster from Halifax. I actually grew up in Herring Cove. One of my best friends lived in Sambro which was a fishing village and most known for its lobster fishing. His family were all lobster fisherman. They would actually head out and be gone for several weeks when they were our lobster fishing. It was big money working on those boats as well. My friend hates being out on the boat so I never got a chance to go out. We got lots of fresh lobster though!!!

That is very cool! I am sure it is hard work... I am always amazed when I watch the show Deadliest Catch at the effort it takes to catch crab in Alaska!

Friend did not know that the lobsters are better to be fished at night, interesting this data I thought that any fish or marine animal was better that it is fish of day maybe to be able to see it, by the way those lobsters look very well I think they are very different to those that you find in my country here are very red @brian.rrr

.

Your recipe .

Excellent friend @brian.rrr, again you surprise me with other of your passions that is fishing, this time you surprise us with the capture of lobsters, it really looks great as you tell us that it was everything, although you say that the network is something heavy and everything else, I'm sure it was great and you're proud of the final result. The lobsters look amazing, they are very big too, I have not seen them that size or that color. Truly, this history of lobster fishing that you share with us is spectacular, I have never eaten lobster but I would like to eat it someday, I have been told that it is very tasty and I do not doubt it. I congratulate you friend and I hope you share with us your next story of fishing or capture of some marine animal that is your passion. regards

I can see that this is really fun for you @brian.rrr. As you said the small ones must be return that is vrry decent of you so others can enjoy this activities to we must let go of the small ones and wait for them to mature and procreate. This is good.

Looks like a lot of fun. How many are you allowed to keep per person per day? And how many did you get? :)

The Limit here is 7 per day per person... that particular trip we caught a lot of small ones, but only about 20 keepers between 5 of us... not bad tho!

That's a pretty good haul. It would cost a fair amount at the store. Do you go often?

I knew some guys that would go right crabbing right off a pier. They'd drop the traps and shine a flashlight down there to attract them. I think they did fairly well.

What a good experience, where it is good to share with friends and family, besides I have never done it but it would be great, greetings.
@calitoo

Awesome catch. We have lobsters here in Hawaii but they are not that easy to find any more. So overfished. Upvoted and followed.

I'am always stopping your blog, nice post.

fishing is one of the best activity to be done, fishing needs lot of patience and luck...

Fishing I really adore
I wish you luck always in fishing
I wish you a happy weekend

Really fishing sucks, I have tried it many times but I have never succeed, maybe it needs patience which I dont have, lobster catching is more difficult, and still you did it, hats off, hope you will enjoy eating them.

I've only ever caught fish.
I don't even know if there are lobsters where I live

Great capture of lobster, good job

Friend Brian, thank you for your fishing story, very educational. I hope you can have a great day of capture and then enjoy it at the barbecue. Best regards.

Good job my friend!

What are the fees to do this activity ?

We do something similar down here in SE Florida called bully netting. Basically roaming around on the flats at night with lights on the bow of the boat and netting the bugs while they're walking around.
