We wanted to institute a new tradition to go fishing on the 1st of January every year. This was the 1st of January 2015. Little did we know that the 1st of January the following year we would have a 3 day old miracle.
My husband and son love the outdoors and fishing is one of their passions.
We went to bed early to make sure that we are in Betty’s Bay just before sunrise. We just waited to welcome the new year.
We left Somerset West at around 5am the morning, we enjoyed the scenic drive along the coast to Betty’s Bay.
We were in awe of the beautiful picture that greeted us on arrival. My husband soon started preparing the equipment and bait with quite precision as he always does.
The day started of slowly and we didn’t get a bite for a while. We just enjoyed the time as family.
The day tested our patience and as we were about to leave my son got the first bite.
The fight was quite a challenge and he struggled to real in the fish trying to stick to his dad’s instructions.
At one time he was even down fighting the fish …..
The fight was not for nothing …..
He was really chuffed with his 17 kg Spotted Gully Shark after being fighting to get it to shore for 15 long minutes.
He safely released the fish after photographs were taken.
Not bad for a six year old, I would say.
It wasn't long after he landed his fish that mommy got a bite.
I was so excited because I knew it was a cob, my husband can identify the fish by the way it pulls the line. It was totally unexpected as the spot we were fishing at, was not known for cobs......
My husband made sure that we remember that day forever.
Wow....that is some impressive fish. And here I thought 'plenty of fish in the sea' is a house wifes tale to get their husbands out the house. Just by the by... I am heading to Betty's Bay for the weekend.... no rods though.
Thank you. I have to say there is not as much as in the olden days. They plundered the sea ...
Wow great fishes. As a kid we used to fish at Brenton on sea, Knysna. We caught many Cob, Galjoen, Steenbras and Stompneus but I must say lately I am struggling to catch anything worthwhile for the pan! Enjoy your fishing and keep on steeming!
