My History with Carbs: A Love-Hate Relationship
Every time I’ve reintroduced carbs into my diet, it has come with noticeable setbacks. I’ve experienced weight fluctuations, energy crashes, and cravings—especially for sweets, which can quickly spiral into a vicious cycle. It almost feels like I’m allergic to carbs in the way my body reacts to them. Still, I was willing to give it another shot in a controlled way to see if it could enhance my workouts.
The Experiment: Vacation, Carbs, and the Gym
With some family vacation time coming up, I saw the perfect opportunity to test carbs again. I wasn’t going to go overboard, but I added more strategically timed carbs around workouts, aiming to see if it would boost my strength, endurance, or recovery.
The Results: Not Exactly What I Expected
Surprisingly, I didn’t feel much of a difference. I didn’t experience a sudden surge of strength in the gym, nor did I notice an improvement in my cardio endurance. I didn’t feel worse, but I also didn’t feel like carbs were some magic fuel source that changed my performance overnight.
By the end of the week, I started feeling a bit more comfortable with the extra carbs, but I can’t say they drastically impacted how I felt or performed. Maybe my body needs a longer adaptation period, or maybe my low-carb approach is just what works best for me.
What’s Next?
I haven’t done any real tracking or measuring yet, so I’ll give it a few more days to assess if anything changes. But for now, I still feel that a low-carb approach aligns best with how my body functions. Maybe carbs just don’t work for me, or maybe I need a more structured reintroduction process.
Either way, this was a great reminder that nutrition is highly individual. What works for one person might not work for another, and sometimes, the best approach is simply sticking with what makes you feel your best.
