I was actually motivated by anime, which lead me to go on very long runs and learn what over-training was the hard, painful, way. Start out with calorie-counting, I use myfitnesspal, and lookup different workouts. I started out with a cheapo $10 door pullup bar and dumbells I borrowed from a friend. Just like any middleschool-level research paper, compare opinions and try out stuff until you find out what works for you. I used forums like bodybuilding.com and active.com to learn about fitness. Hardwork, dedication, and following the 3-leg stool of fitness can put anyone not inhibited by clinical issues outside their control to a level of fitness they want.
