How to resist junk food and go to the gym more often

in #fitness7 years ago

I personally had avoided the gym my whole life Bc I felt intimidated, and didn’t know how to use the machines. What I found what helped me was:

  • go with friends, preferably right after class or work. Creates social obligation, and class acts as a trigger to go vs ‘when you want to go’.
  • no one cares, the same way I don’t notice others at the gym
  • don’t buy junk food at all. Find healthier alternatives like baby carrots and hummus and fruits. I found by not even having it in the house prevented me from unhealthy snacking.
  • when you’re craving a snack, ask yourself if youd want to eat an apple. If the answer’s no, it means you’re not actually hungry, but just want something to eat Bc you’re bored etc.
  • also, if you’re snack-hungry, try a glass of water first. Sometimes our bodies mistake thirst for hunger.
  • try a different physical activity, join a club. Indoor soccer, b-ball, etc. I found a team sport is a lot more fun, keeps me accountable, and the exercise and increased endurance was a great side benefit
  • eat meals that are more filling, w beans and other proteins. They keep you fuller longer, and aren’t filled w empty calories.
  • biking and jogging is also a great way to get exercise, and your brain is naturally occupied vs jogging in place on a treadmill
  • my personal motivation: don’t let another summer go by with a body that you don’t feel good in, and if you’re single, you never know who you’re gonna meet.

I enjoyed reading your tips. Late last night I had bread with peanut butter. If I get that urge again I will try the apple and water methods. Thank you!
