You may choose to call it downvote but when you click on above... it's called flagged and that is exactly how people feel about it.

Then let them be educated about what it really is. Wasn't the point of posting the GIF anyway :)
By the way, most people may be using steemit.com but it's not the only front end for the Steem blockchain. If you don't like the concept of "flag" being applied to downvotes on your posts or comments, busy.org solves that for you.
I don't really care about a flag being applied ... in fact there is currently a tool who is flagging every post I do ... it's just stupidity to claim something clearly labeled 'flag' is a downvote ... it's akin to arguing black is white.
As much as I like the overall look of busy.org ... I don't like their editor so wont be using it.
The concept of flag being removed from the Steemit code is just an approval away. https://github.com/steemit/condenser/pull/1270
Steemit is just a facade for Steem. Steem is running the show. Steem is what pays you. Steem's pending payouts are subject to SP holders' votes, positive or negative, up or down, whatever you want to call them, until the payout period has ended.
your point is? STEEM will always be what pays on the network big deal.
I don't think you understand what I'm saying.
well then say it clearer
Steem is the blockchain network that steemit.com is a GUI interface for.
Steem, the network, pays out STEEM, STEEM Power, and Steem Dollars to accounts that get their posts and comments upvoted.
make a downvote button that by default downvotes -5% where the flag button by default downvotes -100%.... so keep both....
