Everyone reading this would do well to read Isaac Asmov's, non-fiction essay, "The relativity of wrong". In it he discusses how a shift from flat earth, to round earth, to slightly egg shaped earth really doesn't change local utility of the concepts at all. You can navigate by walking in a local area without consequence. But flying is a different matter, as is spaceflight and satellites.
