HURRICANE FLORENCE CATEGORY 4 140 MPH WINDS CAROLINA BOUND
Hurricane Florence is beginning to strengthen again as top winds are now back to 140 mph and the pressure has fallen to 945 millibars. Further strengthening is forecast and we could see Florence reach category 5 status in the next 24 hours. After that it might weaken a bit as it approaches the North Carolina coast on Thursday and landfall during the early morning hours of Friday. For Long Island the good news is that there will be no impact on our weather at all from the landfalling hurricane. Our weather would be exactly the same regardless of whether a hurricane were on the East Coast or not. Some of the remnant rains from Florence might get up here later Monday into Tuesday as a cold front sweeps eastward from the Great Lakes. That looks manageable at this point.
Meanwhile we are now back in the land of tropical humidity though at least it isn't coming with extreme heat again. Today we actually saw some sun in Suffolk County especially in the East where temperatures reached the 80s. Elsewhere it was in the 70s. We did see a few downpours today in some spots and there could be a few more this evening.
Keep an eye on the radar as we have a area of heavy downpours in South Jersey right now that is moving northeast. It is likely to weaken before it gets here but we will leave in the chance through the evening hours. Then its warm and humid after that with overnight temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
The rest of the week it is pretty much the same thing. Clouds with self destruct sunshine and the chance for downpours or a thunderstorm. It will be warm and humid each day Wednesday through Friday with highs in the 70s to near 80 and nights in the upper 60s and lower 70s. The weekend might not be too bad as the high to the north strengthens. Look for a mix of sun and clouds warm and humid conditions over the weekend. Highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s with no rain.
