Folder's review: Foldingcoin

in #foldingcoin7 years ago

Hello Steemian!

Today I want to tell you about an altcoin that brought me to the world of cryptocurrency: Foldingcoin.

Foldingcoin is a counterparty (XCP) token issued every month or so to a group of registered folder (that's the term for someone who's active in Folding@home project). The token are distributed proportional to the amount of folding points produced that month.

The project starts at 2014. It is designed to reward the participant of Folding@Home global network. Before this project was established, folders interested in cryptocurrency have to choose between mining and folding. From economic point of view, it was certainly more profitable to mine cryptocurrency compared to help scientist solve protein folding problem.

FoldingCoin attempts to help folders by rewarding folders with cryptocurrency. Since FoldingCoin is an XCP asset, it does not run its own blockchain and does not need to be secured with cryptographic hash. Therefore, GPU owners could direct their computing power to help with science project and get rewarded at the same time.

To fold, it's best to use x16 PCI-E lane since folding requires greater bandwidth between CPU and GPU. It is also advised to spare one core for each GPU used for folding. If you have dedicated machine for gaming, you should try folding! (Setup will be a little difficult on machine with multiple VGA plugged in x1 riser, since you have to find the VGA plugged into x16 PCI-E lane)

I might revise this article later for further info on folding@home project. Stay tuned!
