Sea salt
Many chefs swear by the taste and it should be healthy too. We are talking about sea salt. You always read "pure nature", healthy and natural etc.
Fleur de sel (as a particularly noble variant) is considered by many consumers to be particularly valuable and tasty. It is produced as a very thin layer of salt on the surface of the water and is usually skimmed off by hand with a wooden scoop

But in reality it's different.
We all know that the oceans are polluted by plastic waste. But how bad it is, at least they know.

A really big problem is the so-called microplastic. Plastic particles that were rubbed on stones and by the sea movement so small that they are barely recognizable.

Obviously, there is a lot of microplastics in Fleur de Sel. In a random sample, Markt (German Documentary show)and the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) had examined five of the most popular Fleur de Sel varieties in the laboratory for residues of plastics.
For comparison, conventional sea salt was analyzed by Aldi, Edeka, Aquasale and Alnatura (Favourit German Grocerys).
All samples had plastic residues. In the Fleur de Sel, the content of microplastic was highest. In one product, the pieces of plastic were even visible to the naked eye.
The types of plastic were polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This is typical packaging waste. The classic sea salt in the sample contained significantly fewer microplastics than the more expensive Fleur de Sel.
Plastic content in salt (in micrograms per kilogram)
Product | Plastic parts |
---|---|
Aquasale Fleur de Sel | 1796 |
Fleur de Sel de Camargue | 582 |
Fleur de Sel de Guérande | 469 |
Fleur de Ibiza | 424 |

How dangerous is microplastics for your health?
A lot of plastic contains estrogen-like ingredients that can negatively affect hormone balance.
In addition, several ingredients in the plastic when consumed are carcinogenic. In addition, the microplastic can bind other toxins from insecticides, dyes, and organic chlorine compounds. These toxins can accumulate in the body.
The manufacturers point to the low dosage of salt and see no need for action.
There are currently no limits for plastic particles in food.
But for me, every extra value is too high.
So I only use rock salt (without iodine or fluoride additives (maybe even more))

Thanks to @theaustrianguy for the tutorial How to make a table in steemit ;)
I think it is good you are raising awareness about this issue. We need to at least try and clean up the oceans. We might also want to switch to more cotton fabric and less polyester so we eat and drink less plastic. We should probably also use less and safer fabric dies.
Yes we have only one planet and we destroy it :( To keep the ocean clean is one big point on the list. Important is also to recycle the plastic and to use the organic plastic. The organic plastic is made with plankton ;)
Wow I didn't know there was organic plastic and that you could make it out of plankton. I think a lot of people simply dump garbage into the ocean. :( There are some ways we can already be cleaning up the oceans but it doesn't seem very important to humans right now.
All of the country think: It's not my garbage. So not our problems.
But here you can see it's the Problem of everyone.

Thanks for this. Plastics aside, I stopped buying seasalt because of Fukushima. It raised my awareness that it's probably better to get salt from a mine where it was formed millions of years before humans polluted the earth.

Wow! Damn! I was aware that the oceans are horribly polluted, but didn't connect that to sea salt quality - thank you for sharing...
If I became super rich I would want to invest in ocean cleanup... Seriously, are any rich people helping invest in that right now??

Damn, that's something i never thought about. I see my favorite sea salt is number 2 on the list: Fleur de Sel de Camargue

Wow!!! I never even thought twice about this. This is extremely scary. We consume so much salt each day and to think about how much plastic could be in it is extremely scary!
It's not so much plastic per day but in the years maybe. And I'm sure it can't be healthy

I very much agree... rather than sea salt you light like to look at salt varieties that are collected from salt lakes??
I just wrote a blog a couple of days ago about going plastic free... saying no to plastic and I mentioned the microbeads used in body products etc. Here's the link if you're interested in reading...

Yes a lot of Microplastic is produced for body products
Yes, it's something that really needs to stop immediately! They're finding it all inside marine animals.

Thank you!
If that's truly the case I am going to use more stone salt from now on.

Wow it is a tragedy all the garbage that can be found in the ocean, I live in a beach area, I am always collaborating in cleaning days of those beach areas.
there is a garbage Island near Hawaiian. It's bigger then Germany.
I think we (the mankind) need to think about it.
It's good you try to clean the branches.

These plastics are harmful to our health but we consume these substances every day without any knowledge. Thanks for article, I appreciate the content

I always thought the pure salt of the sea was harmful because of its lack of processing, now I see that after processed it is not so bad but the plastic is the biggest problem
Which brand do you recommend me?
I use Himalayan Salt - I know it doesn't have much other minerals but it's a good quality.
I am aware of the salt of the Himalayas and there are many people who don't think it is good, however I think it is one if not the best.
