If this is your first time reading Mouthgasm, this is the part of the blog where we showcase the drool-and-jizz-inducing food that we often like to treat ourselves to (after spending hours drooling and jizzing over food porn ourselves). Expect copious seafood and veggie dishes!

Broadway Market

- (Closest station : London Fields, check Google maps for directions)

broadwaymarket (1 of 1).jpg

London is famed for the plethora of markets that line its city streets. Brick Lane Market (see our video guide on Dtube), Portobello Road Market, Camden Market, Leather Lane Market - you name it! To quote Vogue “New Yorkers do brunch, Londoners do markets”, so visiting at least one or two is essential when in town. Luckily, there’s a different market to visit pretty much every day of the week!

mouthgasm4-8.jpg

I had heard and read extensively about Broadway Market, and had always wanted to visit - cheap vintage, great artisan food, live music, cool art and book stores...(hipster vibes). What more could a millennial wish for on a Saturday morning ? (Other than a cure for hangovers or free Tinder premium).

mouthgasm4-5.jpg

Broadway Market is open every Saturday from 9am-5pm, though most stalls start packing up from 4pm onwards. The locals seem to recommend that you hit the market earlier before the crowds start swarming. Unfortunately, us Buttpackers aren’t exactly morning people, so we managed to make it right in time for a late lunch.

Upon arriving at Broadway market, we were instantly blown away by the wonderful aromas all the cooking food was emitting - we sure were hungry! Even the grey, rainy weather couldn’t put us off from following our noses.

mouthgasm4-6.jpg

Once again, you can find a wide variety of cuisines - I must say that in comparison to Brick Lane market it was definitely not as varied although it was also much smaller.

mouthgasm4-9.jpg

However, there seemed to be more stalls selling homemade food, as well as organic fruits, vegetables and even meat and game.

mouthgasm4-4.jpg

All the food looked so beautiful and fresh, it was really hard to resist not bringing everything home. I guess it's a good thing that most of these places take cash only!

Pro tip : Be sure to hit the ATM before you get to Broadway market as the only ATMs on nearby charge! Alternatively, there is a Texaco near Netil market on Mare St, where you can take cash out for free. Luckily some stalls do take card, but not all of them!

mouthgasm4-13.jpg

Oh, and how could I forget about Fin and Flounder, a fishmonger situated on Broadway market, offering one of the widest varieties of seafood I’ve ever seen in London.

broadway (7 of 11).jpg

All kinds of fish big and small, langoustines, shrimp, octopus, and even gooseneck barnacles/percebes, which I’ve never ever seen in the UK before!

broadway (4 of 11).jpg

That drip from that oyster = the state of my nether regions every time I eat oysters

If buying fresh seafood to bring home to cook is not your thing, they even have two stalls outside : one selling raw oysters and sea urchins, the other selling freshly cooked seafood specialties - fried shrimp, fish, brioches with scallops or lobster, oh and lets not forget their lobster mac n cheese!

mouthgasm4.jpg

Though it sure ain’t cheap for street food (8-12). Why must seafood be so expensive in the UK?! It’s an island for fuck’s sake!

mouthgasm4-10.jpg

Freshly made salads, pastries and baked goods that seemed to be cooked with love, cured meats from all over Europe.

mouthgasm4-11.jpg

Oh and did I mention the cheese? So many specialty cheeses that are normally rather difficult to find. I’ve been trying to get my hands on some ricotta salata for the LONGEST time to make some good old pasta/pizza alla Norma (named after the opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini, just like me!) and this was where I finally found it!

mouthgasm4-12.jpg

I also tried some incredible truffle cheese called ‘perla grigia’ or ‘Grey Pearl’ which was aged in the ashes from beech trees… really really unique, and unlike any other truffle cheese that I’ve tried before! The ash gave the cheese a dusty, ashy flavour yet still quite floral at the same time. It was quite a strong taste however, and I felt as if it overpowered the truffle a little. When it comes to truffle cheese, I prefer it to be the key player in my mouth.

mouthgasm4-7.jpg

Food is not the only thing you can find at Broadway market. There are also plenty of stalls selling clothes, accessories, flowers, organic skincare, posters and other crafty items.

mouthgasm4-2.jpg

And of course, there are plenty of sweet treats for a happy ending after eating your way through the market!

mouthgasm4-3.jpg

Even some Easter themed little treats seeing as it was Easter weekend (see more in our last post) .

Broadway Vegan Market

- London Fields Primary School, Westgate St, London E8 3RU

Vegans and vegetarians don’t fret! As per usual veggie/vegan options are widely available, but there is also a special vegan market alcove, 2 minutes away from Broadway market where you can satisfy all your cravings with seitan and pulled jackfruit. We bought some delicious hummus at a stand which had a ton of unusual flavours such as beetroot, ginger with fenugreek and the one we took home - carrot, roasted paprika and garlic. The stand was called ‘Moist’, which was very fitting as that was exactly what my panties were like after having an entire pot of their divine hummus!

Lemlem Kitchen

- (Open only Saturdays) Netil Market, 13 - 23 Westgate Street, London E8 3RL

mouthgasm4-14.jpg

We’re all for unique and unusual things, which is why Lemlem kitchen caught our eye with their Afro-tacos (say whaaaaaaaa???). You heard correctly, I’m telling you the founders are GENIUSES! By using injera (pancake which is a staple food in the horn of Africa) as the taco shell and then using Eritrean spices and flavours to season the filling, this wonderful creation truly enriches the food market scene by bringing people something an entirely new cuisine that they may not have even heard of, in a relatively familiar and convenient manner. Injera is typically eaten as a big pancake with other foods during a sit-down meal, so it seemed so innovative to bring it to the streets in the form of tacos!

mouthgasm4-17.jpg

The lovely owner even offered us a shot of Eritrean ariki to start the day off - never say no to alcohol (yes I know it was 2pm already, shh you’re not my mum, I’ll drink shots for breakfast if I want to OK???). I must say, I’m normally not really into aniseed flavoured anything, but it just tasted like sambuca - and that’s not too surprising since Eritrea has a heavy Italian influence due to it being an Italian colony previously.

mouthgasm4-15.jpg

Overall we had such a great experience at the stand, learning more about the owner’s hometown of Asmara and the beautiful modernist architecture it’s known for - even the stand is inspired by a quirky gas station in Eritrea. Oh and of course the food was sublime, the fish was fried instantly before our eyes, and prepared fresh, and the flavours were really unique - sour and tangy yet with a hint of spice. I’m telling you, this is the next big thing - move aside baos!

Netil 360

- 1 Westgate St, London E8 3RL

broadway (10 of 11).jpg

Finally, if you’re feeling like going for a pint, you can check out the pub on Broadway market called The Dove, which serves a wide range of Belgian beers (Aleks’ favourite!). Prices aren’t cheap however, so after a pint, we headed over to East London’s best kept secret (well maybe my friends and I are just too uncool hence we only discovered this gem recently).

broadway (11 of 11).jpg

Of course, London has no shortage of rooftop bars, but most of them aren’t cheap! If you’re on a budget but still want to soak up some rays (jokes, i meant RAIN) while you soak up some booze while admiring the cityscape of London, Netil360 IS YOUR ANSWER!

broadway (1 of 11).jpg

A fiver for a pint, hell there was even a special Easter offer of 2 a can of beer! What more could you ask for?

Heya, just swinging by to let you know you're being featured in our Daily Travel Digest!

What a superb write up! I'm gonna have to check out neil360 next time I'm there .. actually in a month for my nephews bday. You've given me a great to do list while there :) thanks!

Glad to be of assistance, afterall that's what we aim to do with Buttpacker :) Do check it out though, especially if the weather's nice (though there's a inside area as well). The price for drinks can even be cheaper than some pubs, though it's not really the rooftop bar you wanna be visiting if you're after cocktails and a more "refined air". It's cheap, laid back and super super chill!

cheap and super chill sounds pretty damn good to me :) thanks!

why should it has the sign on the top of the nose of the girl in red?

Well the lady depicted in that mural is Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, and she was a devoted communist and a member of the Mexican Communist party. So that could explain the symbol :) I highly recommend you watch the movie Frida, it's a beautiful movie and it retells the story of her life.

i see.. Frida? sounds good.. thanks @buttpacker

Living near Brick Lane and Columbia Road Flower market when we lived in London meant that was our local weekend market. We went to a few markets during our time - Portobello Rd, Camden, Old Spitafields (also closeby), Borough, Covent Garden etc., but we missed out on Broadway Market. Great post about it and really makes us miss London.

Netil360 was popular amongst our friends and work colleagues, but again we never got the chance to check it out. The views look amazing and Sam used to do his runs by the canal and would see that circular structure in your second rooftop photo (we guess we weren't living that far away from Netil360). Again, good old memories!

Just had a look at Google Maps and can't believe we missed Broadway Market, it was so close! Next time we visit or decide to live there again we won't skip this one out. ;)

I lived near Brick Lane and Columbia Road Flower Market some time last year as well! Must say, we never made it to Columbia Road unfortunately (we're not morning people! 🙈) so I think its forgiveable to miss out on a market or too! There's always next time!

Oh really?! Guess my friends and I are just out of the loop, but I guess we don't really head East that often. Such a chilled spot though, I used to live about a 15 minute walk away, so it's a shame I didn't make the most of it while I was there (though I only discovered it towards the end of my stay in East London).

Yes, always next time. It won't disappoint (and you can have some beautiful fresh ingredients to cook a gourmet weekend meal)!

Yes that is the thing. You take these things for granted when living there saying "I can see it any time, I'll go later", but later comes and you missed out on some cool spots. We're both English and have ties in London (relatives and friends), so no doubt there will be a next time.

Before we left London, we explored more of West London as it was a part we always missed out on: Richmond Park, Kew Gardens and Battersea Park area. Well, you're still in the city, so make the most of it whilst you can. 😊

SO SO SO TRUE! I have done this everywhere I lived, and now that my 5 years in London may be drawing to a close (I haven't decided yet, we shall see), I'm like panicking at all the things that I have put off for 5 years : Hampton Court, Kew Gardens, Tower of London, Tate Britain and so much more. Really need to tackle that list now, I don't even have a full-time job anymore so there really are no excuses!

I guess i'm always too optimistic that I'll return and do those things, but one only has so much time and funds to do everything... Thanks for reminding me to start PLANNING!

Well, hopefully you can get this list going and start crossing these places out. Our list was not only places, but activities like seeing a musical, theatre show or football match. This does add up quite a bit and bruise the bank account, but we were still earning a decent salary and justified these experiences with the fact this could be our last time living in central London. Next time (if there is one), we would probably be living in the suburbs taking the commuter train in Monday to Friday and therefore resent coming into London over the weekend.

Do what you can and the ones that you want to see as you can't do everything. Hopefully, you'll figure out where your next destination in life is. :)

Well I'll have you know that I just managed to cross off another item off my list this weekend! And as you mentioned, my list isn't just places either, but also musicals, parties, bars and restaurants...so yeah unfortunately being London it is a huge bruise to the bank account, and my salary was not too decent for London... But yeah I couldn't commute from suburbs, I just love living in the centre of a city and being close to everthing!

Well I have a 5 month trip to figure that out 🙈

What was that item off the list? Or will it be in your latest post?

It was perfect living in the centre and worth paying the few extra pounds (and more) to live centrally.

Five months in South America will be awesome and we're NOT jealous at all :p

Ashamed to say lived in London for so many years and I've never been heard of the market before ☺️😣

No shame in that, you're definitely not alone! I hadn't heard of it until recently, and when I was telling a lot of my friends about it, they also hadn't heard of it either despite living in London for many years. Do check it out on a sunny Saturday. Great vibes and food to die for!

You are not only becoming better and better after every post, but you always manage to have 1 very fancy + cool + nice photo and another 1 pic that makes me cum to think you guys are awesome!

Thanks dude, love seeing your comments ! We spent around 3-4 hours on this post, not including walking around the market and taking photos. Hope you enjoyed the effort, and of course - more to CUM ;)

It's a lot of effort. 4 hours. I Consider one has to love and enjoy what we do here on Steemit, since 1-20 USD for a post, that took hours isn't worth it, so loving what you do is important and crucial.

I also consider thinking about the future is important, creating connections here, the community we build where we get to know each other, after two years (more or less) together, people become friends on this journey.

People create good content, sometimes people value it sometimes people don't, its hard

Its the same with curators, some people appreciate the comments with votes, others not so much.

So, all in all, I think only the great ones survive on Steemit, as you guys who have a very nice content.

Eh i'm sure some people spend even more than that. But I guess the most important as you said is not love and enjoy what you're doing - if it was all about the money, this probably isn't the most efficient/effective way. But it certainly is fun if you like creating content, and of course creating connections here is definitely another key aspect. We've only been active for about 2-3 months and we've already met so many amazing people, so who knows what it's gonna be like a year or two from now!

Thank you so much for your support , you sure do help us stay motivated 🙈

Those words are worth a lot to me, thanks also to you for your feedback, but honestly, you guys rock. Big hug. See you in the next post =)
