Restaurant Review - Happy Italy, Rotterdam

How Italian is Happy Italy Restaurant? Is it authentic? Hard to say. Maybe best to judge for yourself but here’s how I liked it.

The quality is mediocre. I like to think of myself as a pizza aficionado so if I have an opportunity to try something new, I usually do. This pizza is quite salty and the dough is dry. That is not inherently bad, but there is nothing that balances it out. Luckily I always order a portion of house-made tomato sauce in case something like this happens. This time it really came handy. The sauce isn’t bad but we got it steaming hot which isn’t what I expected. I guess that makes it freshly made, which is a plus.

There is only one size of pizza and it’s quite affordable for what you get. If you are visiting with a kid or a slimmer girl, order one and share and then order a dessert. It would make more sense as you won’t overeat and you experience something new as well. I really pushed it by eating a whole pizza by myself.

Beer seems relatively affordable compared to other locations and service is quick and very polite. I see lots of people complain about the service but I really dislike being served so I might not be very objective. If something isn’t just plain unedible or dirty I won’t mind. Very young people work there, I hope they get paid adequately.

The setting and vibe is likeable, a bit steampunk since it resembles a warehouse with graffiti all over. The restaurant is huuge but that doesn’t stop queues forming at the entrance. It shows how many people are stuffed in a small area in this city. I couldn’t imagine someone in my country waiting in front of an establishment in order to pay for something inside. That would be crazy.

All in all, a moderately satisfying experience. Huge portions but cheap prices for the city. Evens out in my opinion. Far cry from authentic Italy though.
