How to Roast a Turkey

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Hi there! Did you know that in Southern California, during the Thanksgiving season, frozen whole turkeys go on sale for just $0.49 per pound?! I can't resist!

And, if you follow me, you might remember, I make homemade dogfood for my very best canine friend, Brisket.

Each of the three promotional turkeys I cooked increased in both size, AND simplicity of recipe!

In the spirit of this progress in simplification, may I now bring you:

Unstuffed Turkey, roasted with garden herbs!

20171129_154957.jpgThis year, my new herb garden delivered with pineapple sage, rosemary, and oregano

20171129_160736.jpg I lined my roasting pan with foil, drizzled olive oil, and laid rosemary twigs up as an herbal rack

20171129_162222.jpg I rubbed the entire turkey including its cavity with salt, pepper, ground sage, and thyme

Preheat oven to 330F in my case, yours may vary

I draped the bacon I had on top. Not very lavish in this instance, since in prior roasts, I used entire pounds woven in a lattice on top. One slice or many, the bacon adds moisture, salt, and flavor, but is ultimately just optional

20171129_162735.jpg More foil is added on top, to prevent the government from reading my Turkey's mind.
Haha. I mean, to prevent my turkey from drying out, since you have to bake it for at least 20 min per pound

20171129_223339.jpg The turkey emerges out from undercover from about 6 hours at 330F. Back into the oven it goes, to brown it and complete the cooking process

Voila! A moist and delicious turkey the whole family will be forced to enjoy for a week at the minimum. Grin or i will punish you!

Ps--
I have no documentation of this 23 lb turkey being carved for your delectation, because the wolves that I live with tore into its crispy/juicy fowl flesh with an unspeakable hunger. No carving elegance to depict.

Rest assured that I will try to capitalize on the bone boiling good times upcoming: Making the most of your turkey broth soup

I am so filled with gratitude that these beautiful creatures gave their lives to feed my family. May I please live up to their sacrifice.

I didn’t cook a turkey this year. I kind of missed it. We had dinner at my dad’s friend’s place, so leftovers either! Sad! Last week we roasted a chicken and made all the trimmings though, because we were missing them!

We're doing the same thing in Algeria.
I think we're influenced by Ottoman civilization.

I certainly sat down on the sofa and put up my feet on my ottoman after roasting this bird. So happy life is plump in Algeria, too!

I never really thought to put bacon with the turkey👍

So happy to inspire with new ideas! The bacon is like the cherry on top ;)

Right!.. I am a fan of bacon. I missed out on trying it for thanksgiving, but definitely will bring it in with the New Year

Following you to see it unfold <3

Hahaha, the EMP turkey :D

We got a chest freezer years ago, so when meats go on sale around the holidays, we fill it up for the year. It lives at our youngest daughter's house now, but when I go there I pull something out to bring home.
I know, freezer, grid down...but while we wait we have plenty...and if it does go grid down we will have plenty to share with neighbors who have no preps.

The herbs look amazing, I cannot wait to get some going indoors here :)

Lol i am giggling because of the "emp turkey", you get it!

A freezer should be able to maintain no waste temps for some time if you don't open it, i am told. Either way, so glad to interact dear @elew, blessings and good cheer, and best wishes for your herbs

Duh, I guess I should have mentioned that I stuffed the cavity and armpits with fresh herbs
