Horchata is a typical drink of the region of Valencia in Spain. It is one of the most popular drinks of Valencia.
Horchata is made with chufa (or nutmeg), a plant known since ancient Egypt and introduced in Spain by the Arabs in the 8th century.It is grown in 16 villages north of Valencia, in the Huerta, the vegetable plain that surrounds the city. Spain being the world's largest producer.It is its tubers that are used to make horchata, a refreshing sweet drink with digestive, diuretic and disinfectant virtues.It is traditionally served with fartons, brioche rolls of elongated shape.
Horchata is mainly consumed during the long summer months during which the heat is difficult to bear.Horchata is ideal for cooling off. However, you will find throughout the year in supermarkets in Spain.
It can be enjoyed in traditional places such as Horchatería Daniel, Santa Catalina, Bertal, or Casa de l'Orxata. The largest number of horchateria is located in Alboroya, which is considered the birthplace of horchata.
If you go to Valencia, do not miss to taste this specialty of the region in the "horchaterías".
