We live in a tiny hamlet (4 houses) in rural SW France. Several such hamlets and very small villages make up what is termed a “Commune”. Each spring we get an invitation to “lunch” in the commune hall.
This is completely free and took place last Sunday: we arrived at just before 12:30 and were greeted with a champagne cocktail and nibbles.
On sitting down we began with cream of asparagus soup accompanied by a local white wine, this was followed by a white fish in a lemon sauce with rice (the wine flows freely throughout the meal!).
To clean the palate a mandarin sorbet immersed in neat cognac was served . Next a beautifully cooked steak, with dauphinoise potatoes and vegetables complemented by a red Bordeaux wine.
The cheese and salad course followed! Dessert, (with more champagne) was profiteroles. Just to finish off nicely; coffee and cognac!
Fortunately all this took about four and a half hours – and the apart from the great food the French company was very entertaining, but we did have a little sleep when we got home!
