Not only does making guac at home save you money, but it gets rid of all the added preservatives and sugars you find in store bought alternatives.
Now I've been testing out different guac recipes for a while now, and have found that it all comes down to four main ingredients to make it or break it:
- avocado
- salt
- cayenne pepper
- lime
Everything else is optional. Other common ingredients include red onion, cilantro, garlic, jalapeno etc. but it can honestly do without.
To specify the amounts I would recommend you go with (to start):
- 1 whole avocado
- three generous dashes of salt
- two generous dashes of cayenne pepper
- juice of 1/4 lime
Then smush everything together with a fork.
I found that I needed a lot more salt than expected so if the flavour isn't there add a little more salt, test, and repeat until its perfect. If you go overboard with the salt add a little more lime as it counteracts the saltiness.
Enjoy!
