Señor bear | Birthday Dinner | Denver, CO

in #food7 years ago

Recently I had my 23rd birthday...

I know, I know I'm getting old.

We decided to go and out and get some drinks but keep it easy because I was flying out the next morning to go to Chicago for a few days.

Before my birthday, we were in an Uber (a favorite place of mine to get recommendations) and were recommended Señor bear.

Señor bear is an Argentina styled small place restaurant.

And this recommendation held up.

Their menu is exciting and their drinks to die for.

We chose their three courses "Bear's Picnic Basket" where everyone at the table has to participate, and which we decided to get the drink pairing with.

Let's start with the first course.

These were the appetizers.

The Chef started us with Albacore Tuna Ceviche and Mole Negro.

After talking to our waiter, he explained how the mole is sourced from a small village in Mexico that exports to them frequently and it was terrific.

The mole negro came prepared with roasted winter squash, burrata, mole crumble, squash vinaigrette, and olive oil.

While the albacore tuna ceviche had roasted lemon dressing, marinated romaine, purslane, parsley, ají chile puff, and pickled jalapeños.

On top of that came the drink pairing which was DIA EN LA PLAYA, consisting of Lunazul Reposado, POM, Citrus, Jarritos Grapefruit Soda.

This course was ridiculously amazing and left us wanting more.

Course two came out at two different times.

At first, we thought that we only had one or two plates coming out, leaving us thinking we wouldn't be full after the meal.

And then we ended up with eight different plates on the table.

Here's what this course contained:

  • Coconut Spare Ribs - pepper, garlic cumin oregano, and orange mojo
  • Duroc Pork Secretto - orange, black pepper, and rosemary salmuera
  • Mofongo - pork shoulder, plantain, chile rojo, green papaya, cabbage, mango, habanero, garlic
  • Patatas - huancaina sauce, chive
  • Coconut Rice - Criolla salsa

My two favorites were the Duroc Pork Secretto and Coconut Rice.

The coconut rice had this perfect coconut embedded flavor, with a fluffy feel too it that capped off the meal is the starch.

My highlight, the Duroc Pork Secretto was amazing.

They use a cut of pork that is typically thrown out in the U.S. resemblant of the flank steak part of the cow and prepare it in a tender way similarly to the flank steak.

And it was amazing.

For drinks, this included red wine, specifically the Natura, Carmenere from Chile

Dessert consisted of the:

  •  Chocolate Soft Serve - goats milk caramel, salted peanut, cocoa chile crisp
  •  Churros - lime and vanilla sugar, brown butter curd

Now the best part of the dessert was the churros.

After finishing the churros, our waiter poured hot rum into the center and stirred it until the sugar dissolved into it.

The bowl conveniently had mouthpieces to drink out of, and thus we took a churro sugar laden shot of rum.

Dessert included the ILLUMINUTTY consisting of Amontillado Sherry, Bonal, Cynar, Walnut Bitters.

Of course, I have to show my birthday cake...

A shot of Tequila Ocho Blanco.

A great cap to the night.

All in all, Señor bear is somewhere that you should check out in Denver.

Thanks for reading,

Austin
